Mazda Confirms Two Brand-New Engines for the U.S.
Mazda Confirms Two Brand-New Engines for the U.S.-April 2024

Mazda CX-9

Mazda is continuing its march towards . We finally have official word that the Zoom Zoom brand is giving the U.S. market two brand new engine options that will debut in two new crossovers.

Mazda’s future engine plans have been back and forth for the past few years. They gave us a short-lived diesel in the CX-5, but it cost too much, and no one bought ( for) it, so it was dropped. Then came word that the Mazda6 was with rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged I6 engine. But sedan sales have been on the decline for years, and Mazda for the next-gen 6, leaving us with a will-they-won’t-they frame of mind for the I6.

Then we learned the rest of the world was getting a rear-wheel drive plug-in hybrid crossover from them called , but that it wasn’t destined for the United States. However, it did have a plug-in hybrid powertrain based around a 2.5-liter I4. If we weren’t getting the CX-60, could we at least have the engine? Well, it looks as if we’re getting both.

Mazda confirmed to me that the U.S. is set to get both a turbocharged I6 and a plug-in hybrid powertrain. These engines will debut in two new crossovers called the CX-70 and CX-90. From , the CX-70 and CX-90 will both have platforms based around this new straight-six engine. That said, that’s about allwe know.

A report from Australia’s Car Expert who also confirmed the engines coming to North America, says that the I6 is turbocharged and paired with a 48V mild hybrid system and puts out 280 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. If true, those are pretty low power numbers from something that’s both turbocharged and paired with a 48V system. We’ll have to wait and see though. Mazda plans to drop the CX-70 and CX-90, along with a new CX-50 sometime in 2023.

At $11,995, Is This 2011 BMW 750iL Alpina B7 A Tuner Treasure?
Today’s 750iL isn’t your everyday F02, it’s a rare performance edition massaged by the factory-approved tuning house, Alpina. Let’s decide if it comes with an alpine-steep price. To be chosen as the pace car for the Indy 500, a car needs to have some serious performance creds. Chevy’s Corvette...

The Volvo EX30's Interior Has A Gigantic Soundbar And Visibly Not Much Else
The EX30, Volvo’s imminent compact, electric SUV, will attempt to do what no Volvo has before: . Ostensibly through a subscription model because how else are the youths to afford a new car, especially a Volvo, in 2023? The interior sure does look pretty though, in that classically thoughtful-but-discreet-about-it...

At $16,000, Does This 1986 Chevy Corvette Convertible Set The Pace?
With another Indy 500 now in the history books, we’re going to look back at a pacer from the past. Today’s Corvette has an interesting history and appears to be in great shape. Could that ensure its price takes the checkered flag? I can remember back from when I...

At $2,500, Could This 1986 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible Be Le Good Deal?
The ad for today’s LeBaron claims the car has never seen snow. Could its impressive condition and price have buyers wanting to rain some cash on its present owner? We have all long been told that it’s a paper-thin line that separates genius from madness. Interestingly, a similarly skinny...

At $7,500, Is This 1991 Dodge Daytona Shelby A K-Car That’s A-OK?
Are you a shade tree mechanic that enjoys some detective work? If so, today’s Shelby Daytona may be right up your driveway. According to the ad, it presently won’t start. Let’s see if that makes its price a non-starter too. Lipsticking a pig isn’t some weird kink that no...

The Best Cars In The World Come In Yellow Now
Since I’ve spent a lot of time configuring Cadillac CT5-V Blackwings and CT4-V Blackwings on the Cadillac site. After the limited production cars sold out, I vacillated between “,” and “,” but never really found a color I was 100% sold on. 2023 brought “” and a handful of...
