Back in the 1960s, motorcycle racing was a different world. It was a time before or , before and , when top-tier racing could still happen at displacements smaller than . A time when still raced, and did so atop this: A 125cc Ducati race bike dubbed the Barcone. Now, that very bike is up for sale.

The Barcone came at the end of years of early , and claims it was the company’s last single-cylinder race bike. Only four Barcones were ever built, and this one — the Barcone heading to auction at Bonhams — was campaigned by Hailwood.

For a race bike, the Barcone’s specs are quaint. Its single 125cc cylinder puts out a massive 22 horsepower and revs out to 12,500 RPM. Its livery, all silver and blue, has looped all the way back around to being retro. Tell me this isn’t the direct inspiration for Ducati’s Scrambler Café Racer.

The aesthetics matter more than the engineering on the Barcone, since it’s unlikely the bike’s buyer will ever actually ride it. It’s a museum piece now - more important for its legacy than its performance. Plus, at an estimated sale price of $150,000, it’s likely a bit too expensive to take out to a track day.

The Barcone heads to auction next weekend, April 22. If you’ve got the cash and the eye for vintage racing memorabilia, you could do a lot worse than picking up Mike Hailwood’s old Ducati. If not, though, don’t fear — that Scrambler can get you pretty close on its own.

For $18,000, This Porsche Is Plug And Play
Porsche's 911 has always been an electrifying ride. Today's cabriolet takes that to the extreme, trading its gas-passing flat six for 144 volts of captured lightning. I wonder if you'll find its price equally electrifying? Older cars from defunct companies are a particular challenge for owners - I should know,...

The BMW i8 Is The Gorgeous Beta Of A Car You'll Eventually Own
The BMW i8 packs the straight-line acceleration of a Porsche 911, three times the fuel economy, and a hybrid drivetrain into the intelligent architecture of my dreams. It's one of the few cars to go from show to street without being diluted like prohibition-era scotch. You'll probably never drive one....

2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S: The Jalopnik Review
The Porsche 911 is a car for dentists. A car with the engine in the wrong place. A car that has evolved from the Beetle. A car that has never had a new design. A car where precision beats passion. Those all the cliches? Good. The is terrifyingly fast and...

For $3,600, It Depends On What Your Meaning Of IS Is
Today's E21 has a lot going for it, including being an IS and featuring a sweet set of Recaro seats. You'll have to decide if its price is worth standing up and cheering for. Yesterday, mullets were sprouted and PBRs were cracked open in honor of our special guest, the...

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid: The Jalopnik Review
Even in this era of the and its ilk, enthusiasts tend to look down on most hybrid cars as slow, dull, soft, and antithetical to driving fun. The proof that this might be changing comes from the most unlikely of places: the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid, a car that exceeded...
