Mother Of God, A Porsche 996 911 Just Sold For $1.2 Million
Mother Of God, A Porsche 996 911 Just Sold For $1.2 Million-June 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:16

The Porsche 996-generation 911 Classic Club Coupe is parked in a warehouse looking menacing.

Porsche’s 996-generation 911 is supposed to be the cheapest way to get into the brand’s rear-engined flagship model, right? I mean, it’s . That could change, though, if the recent $1.2 million sale of the is any kind of bellwether.

To be fair, the Classic Club Coupe is no regular 996. It was built by Porsche Classic at the behest of the Porsche Club of America over the course of two years and was heavily customized. They even put the engine from a 996 GT3 in it, making it as fast as it is handsome.

Other notable changes include a fixed ducktail rear wing and a double-bubble-style roof. The interior was completely restored and features woven leather houndstooth inserts in the seats as well as . In all, it’s a really well-considered love letter to Porsche’s least-loved 911.

The auction, which took place at Porsche’s Atlanta Experience Center, and featured 74 other unique and rare cars, was part of . Among the other vehicles offered for sale were a genuine 962 race car and a 904 Carrera GTS.

Now that we have the facts out of the way let’s get down to one of my favorite pastimes: wild speculation. So, now that we’ve seen this seven-figure hammer price for a 996-generation 911, will we see a rise in prices for other 996 models? Is this a sign that people are coming around on the much-maligned (I think unfairly so, but I’m biased), or is this just one weird person with a boatload of greenbacks wanting the best 996 at any price?

Could This Long-Garaged 1974 De Tomaso Pantera Grab $47,500?
Could This Long-Garaged 1974 De Tomaso Pantera Grab $47,500?
How much does a car wash cost these days? It seems that it's too much for the seller of today's Pantera. Of course if it weren't all dusty, you wouldn't know it was found in a barn... er, garage, or so says that same seller. Will that rare and dusty...

For $6,995, This 1980 Toyota Corolla Shakes Off The Beige
Toyota killed most of the Corolla's soul when they shifted the model from rear to front-wheel drive back in the day. Today's Corolla is a rear-driver from the '80s, and goes the extrovert route one better by rocking a Lexus V8 and some serious attitude. Is that enough for you...

This Custom 1985 Nissan 300ZX Lets It All Hang Out for $1,900.
X, Y, and Z are the last letters in the English alphabet. In contrast, today's custom Nissan is first and foremost a ZX, and it may come with a price that will have you asking why not. There are things that just don't belong together. Among those are square pegs...

For $27K This 2001 Honda S2000 Rocks A Viper Motor. That Is All
Today's Nice Price or Crack Pipe car is called SNIPER. That's owed to its being an 2000 with a Dodge V10 wedged into its engine bay. I wonder if that will be enough for you to think its seller could also be owed nearly thirty grand for it? Do you...

2015 Nissan 370Z Roadster: The Jalopnik Review
When was the last time you thought about a Nissan 370Z? Sure, it came out a few years ago, but for some reason it seems like the vast majority of people would only answer with "never." It's a little, over-powered, rear-wheel drive monster, and you can get it with a...

Farewell To The Cadillac CTS-V, The Best Product Of Old GM
Farewell To The Cadillac CTS-V, The Best Product Of Old GM
There was a brief period of time after the bailout and before the recall crisis where GM was filled with a spirit of "we can do better" before the reality of just how bad they'd been had fully sunk in. This golden era product many treasured products, including the new...
