NASA Has The Coolest Vending Machines In The World
NASA Has The Coolest Vending Machines In The World-February 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:14:30

NASA's held its annual open house earlier this month, and like any good space dork I was there. There, of course, was all manner of exciting and interesting stuff to see, tended by scientists who seemed genuinely surprised and delighted by the fact that so many locals want to come gawk at their robots and celestial maps.

One of the best details, however, are the vending machines that dispense precision drill bits, saw blades, couplers, and other bits of tooling.

The machines are located in JPL's machine shops, the birthplace of all our and the from Earth, among many other famous robotic spacecraft.

At first I thought the vending machines were a very clever idea birthed at JPL, a great way to dispense and keep track of small tools and consumable resources. While this is indeed a clever idea, I found that the vending machine for tools idea is not JPL's. After a bit of extremely cunning internet sleuthing (pro tip: I Googled the name on the front of the machines) I soon learned that these are , used all over the place.

I'll admit, I was a bit disappointed to find that these weren't some exciting JPL hack, and that there was still a Twix stuck in every sixth drill bit or something. I soon got over that because no matter where they are, to folks only accustomed to getting out of vending machines, these seem novel. I've been around machine tools, but only in smaller-type shops, so I had never seen these things.

I suppose if you're a dedicated embezzler or company supply-purloiner, these are ruining everything for you, but for the rest of us, I think they're pretty great.

Russia Begins Bombing Operations In Syria As A Bigger Strategic Picture Emerges
It was just a matter of time before Russia’s new expeditionary pocket air force in Syria began its bombing operations. Over the last few weeks Russian drones have been flying missions out of Latakia Air Base looking for targets. Now the first Russian shots have been fired in what could...

This Father And Son Bike Build Story Made Me Want To Have Kids
I’ve never had much of a paternal instinct. Never saw myself with a big family or missing the bustle of a busy house. That all changed a bit last night. I followed the link from the email tip and the first thing I noticed was the title “Home Built” and...

The Moment I Began Selling Secrets To The Russians -- Or So They Thought
The Moment I Began Selling Secrets To The Russians -- Or So They Thought
I gripped the wheel tightly and steered the Jeep toward the warehouse. My heart was thumping so hard I thought Oleg might be able to hear it in the passenger seat. “You okay?” he asked in that flat, stiff English of his. “Totally,” I lied. The air was chilly for...

Can Honda Make A Three-Wheeled Motorcycle That Doesn't Suck?
Can Honda Make A Three-Wheeled Motorcycle That Doesn't Suck?
Performance tricycles are a strange segment. The Can-Am Spyder proved halfway decent to ride but embarrassing to be seen on. The is polarizing, though we love it around these parts. Now Honda presents the Neowing concept; which of course they say does it all without compromise. What do you think?...

Honda's Electric Retro Scooter Could Be A Cute Cheap Transport Rival To Vespa
Vespa has unlocked a market secret: people who want to get around on a super small motorcycle want it to look cute. That’s why “Vespa” is the only brand of scooter everyone’s heard of. Looks like Honda just might adopt that strategy themselves with this new EV-Cub, and I say...
