How should a country go about establishing itself as a competent figure in the world of travel and military power in space? It’s a tough process: You have to know how to send both satellites and anti-satellite missiles into space. And, according to NASA, you probably should actually know what you’re doing when you do it.

Last week, to shoot down one of their own satellites that had been orbiting 186 miles (300 km) above Earth—what’s known as Low Earth Orbit. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi fully supported the action—he called it an establishment of India as “,” since space weapons are a sign of an advanced military.

Turns out, NASA doesn’t think the whole blowing-things-up-in-space-to-prove-our-competence is a good idea.

See, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine expressed just how dangerous this kind of activity can be in a on Monday.

When India blew up the satellite, they created a ton of space debris that’s now just floating around in space. According to Bridenstine, many of those pieces aren’t actually big enough for NASA to track, but they’re still big enough to cause damage to other satellites—like the :

What we are tracking right now, objects big enough to track — we’re talking about 10cm (four inches) or bigger —about 60 pieces have been tracked.

That is a terrible, terrible thing to create an event that sends debris at an apogee that goes above the International Space Station.

That kind of activity is not compatible with the future of human spaceflight.

Those are some pretty strong—but completely understandable—words. It’s one thing to prove yourself capable of space defense. It’s another when you’re putting other space equipment in danger in the process.

The F-35 Had A Week Full Of Good And Bad News
Maybe the program is just not supposed to work out. Despite a week where the system appeared to display a growing sense of maturity, old problems of reliability, pilot hypoxia and lagging airframe deliveries eclipsed progress. But, first, the good news. On Monday, the U.S. Air Force the first operational...

I Bought Another Honda CBR900RR That I Can Actually Ride
The that I’ve been writing about is almost too much of a unicorn. Low-mileage, near-perfect examples don’t exactly grow on trees. I want to preserve it. That doesn’t mean park it forever in the living room, but it does mean daily-rider duties are off the table. The bike doesn’t take...

It’s Time To Accept That North Korea Is A Nuclear State

The 2018 Honda Gold Wing Is Lighter And So High Tech It Has Apple CarPlay
The Honda Gold Wing and I are both headed into our 43rd year. Unlike me, the Gold Wing keeps getting lighter, sportier and more efficient. The 2018 version of the venerable six-cylinder sheds 80 pounds, picks up a claimed 20 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and sports a nifty double-wishbone...

The Freakish 3-Wheel Yamaha Niken Sportbike Looks Unbelievable
Yamaha brought something interesting for the Tokyo Motor Show, and it’s a bizarro three-wheeler sportbike. Surely it’s too early for it to be some sort of elaborate April Fool’s joke, right? The bike is called the Yamaha Niken, and it looks like it has a conventional rear end and Yamaha’s...

Here's Exactly What It Cost To Rebuild A 1993 Honda CBR900RR Unicorn To Showroom Status
Finding the bike of my dreams was 95 percent of the battle. Here’s the other 5 percent. I bought a unicorn of a motorcycle—a with only 988 miles on the clock. What was the catch? It had been sitting for many years and was not in the least bit a...
