NASCAR Ran 30 Laps Under Caution Because No One Could Figure Out The Race Lineup
NASCAR Ran 30 Laps Under Caution Because No One Could Figure Out The Race Lineup-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:28

Remember grade school, when you got behind the line leader and stayed there? Well, a late caution in NASCAR’s Martinsville race was like picture day in grade school, when you had to confusingly line up by height. Not even officials knew where drivers were supposed to be, and they ran 30 laps trying to figure it out.

The caution came in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ Goody’s 500 at Martinsville Speedway during green-flag pit stops, which is, admittedly, a confusing time at any track since the running order constantly shuffles. And at a short track like Martinsville, drivers can go multiple laps down by stopping to pit. But things aren’t usually so... strangely officiated. Or prolonged.

When Carl Edwards brought the caution flag out on lap 357, there were only a handful cars on the lead lap. According to ESPN’s , those drivers were A.J. Allmendinger, Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray, Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch. But there was confusion on the opening of pit road, and everyone ultimately got out of order and really confused.

The race didn’t go back to green until lap 387, and when it did, USA Today’s said the scoring monitor was still wrong. Here’s a quick Twitter recap of what happened, since no one knows exactly how to explain it:

Ha. Oh, the All-Star Race. .

They did go around again. And again and again and again. Then race director David Hoots got a bit frustrated with everyone:

Never change, NASCAR. We all need to have a picture-day moment every once in a while.

Stage Breaks In NASCAR Make Me Feel Robbed Of Racing
Stage Breaks In NASCAR Make Me Feel Robbed Of Racing
After the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stage break of 2017, I just feel robbed. The first stage of today’s Daytona 500 ended on lap 60, and the second stage went green on lap 68. The caution break between stages eats up laps that count towards the race distance,...

This 199 MPH Dog Bone Is Roborace's Actual Self-Driving Race Car
Autonomous racing series Roborace finally showed off its first racing car—the appropriately named Robocar—at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We’ve seen the in renders before, but they finally built a working car to behold. It’s looks a bit sharper all around than the renders and—dare I say it—much cooler...
