New York Auctions Cars Trashed By Hurricane Sandy For As Low As $300
New York Auctions Cars Trashed By Hurricane Sandy For As Low As $300-July 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:09

Need a car on the cheap? Don't want one of those they offer now? Then head on down to your local New York City public auction for the deal of the century: cars as low as $300 just because they were obliterated during Hurricane Sandy.

The reports that city officials couldn't locate the owners of some 535 cars during last year's hurricane, so they began auctioning their vehicles off this week.

Bargain hunters are apparently making a gamble on many of the cars, even though they don't have keys, can't be registered for road use without an inspection, and are quite possibly only good for spare parts.

“We’ve sold one as low as $300 and we had one above $10,000,” said auctioneer Richard Maltz. “Just because a vehicle is titled as flood-damaged doesn’t mean it’s inoperable.”

Still, he suggested buyers looking for cheap wheels should be aware of the risks. Cars submerged under salt water are usually destined for the scrap heap. But water didn’t reach the engine blocks in some vehicles, offering hope to those stalking bargain transportation.

“To some degree, it’s a gamble,” Maltz conceded.

You hear that? To SOME DEGREE it's a gamble! That's barely even a warning at all. Maltz told the newspaper that they have "a real smorgasbord" of vehicles ranging from flooded compacts to flooded high-end luxury cars.

Some cars were sold on Tuesday and more will be auctioned on May 2 and May 7. doesn't have a full list of the cars for sale yet, but we'll have to keep an eye on it. There may be some real gems in there somewhere.

Anyone willing to give a Sandy-flooded car another shot?

At $2,900, Could This 1984 Toyota Camry Be A Turbo Diesel Deal?
“Whoa, cool Camry” is something no one ever says, Seeing as today’s Camry is a turbo diesel with a five-speed, we might just have to alter our perception of what cool is. Let’s also see what this oil-burning sedan’s price tag should reasonably be perceived to be. When you...

At $3,900, Could This 1978 Datsun 620 Pick Up Your Spirits?
It seems that at present, mini-trucks are having a moment. Today’s Datsun is one of those, and we’re just going to have to see if it’s priced to make a nice present for a new owner. Have you ever looked at an unfamiliar manila folder and thought to yourself...

At $10,500, Could This 1967 Volvo L3314N 'Laplander' Prove A Memorable Deal?
As we honor those who have given their lives in the service of our country, we can also consider a military service survivor from another nation—today’s Volvo L3314N. Let’s decide what exactly one should pay for this veteran vehicle. One of my favorite AC/DC songs is Whole Lotta Rosie,...

At $14,750, Is This 'Museum-Quality' 2000 Mazda MX-5 Miata Artistically Priced?
While the second-generation Miata may not be as well-loved as its predecessor, it’s still shocking that today’s NB has done less than break-in miles over the last 20 years. Could its premium condition equal a premium price? You know how the old saying goes—close only counts in horseshoes and...
