Not Even The Mars Curiosity Rover Can Escape The Back Seat Driver
Not Even The Mars Curiosity Rover Can Escape The Back Seat Driver-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:14:07

As the Curiosity rover crawls its way across the Martian surface, it has to deal with a team of over 20 people to decide its every move. That makes riding in the car with an annoying navigator seem like a luxury.

NASA teaches its engineers how to “drive” the Curiosity rover in the “Mars yard” at its Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. It’s the home of a nearly-identical twin of Curiosity, the only differences being the Earthling doesn’t require a plutonium heart for power, and some key components, like the wheels, are made of thicker materials to account for the gravity gap between the two planets.

The most interesting revelation in this video from Tom Scott is the fact that it takes a team of 20 people who are certified to “drive” the Curiosity rover, with a communication delay of between four and 24 minutes from here to Mars. The 20 different drivers each operate on their own comfort levels, with certain engineers to take over for different terrains and situations.

You don’t drive the Curiosity with a joystick and live feed, either. Instead, the whole operation is more like sending directions with messages and code, and letting the Rover figure out its own way. So just imagine yourself alone on another planet, having to wait 20 minutes to be told what to do next all of the time from a team of 20 back seat drivers.

What a nightmare. But that’s why Curiosity is there and I’m not. Yea, that’s why.

A 315-HP Yamaha FZ1 Is Basically Unridable
There was a time, not too long ago, where anything with two wheels and 200 hp was nearly impossible to control. Now there's this: a home-build, turbocharged Yamaha FZ1 that's putting out enough grunt to spin the world sideways. The builder, known only as Mr. Helmut, has slapped a turbocharger...

The Shredder Eats Mines Raw For Lunch & Cooks Them For Dinner
Usually tanks are supposed to avoid mines and buried bombs, but somebody, and something, has to roll forward first on the battlefield regardless of what lies beneath. Enter the M1 Assault Breach Vehicle, otherwise known as "The Shredder." This derivative of the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank was developed after...

Miniguns In HD At Dusk Look Like Lead Laser Cannons
The Minigun was originally designed by General Electric (you will never look at your microwave the same again will you?) in 1962 and has been in continuous use since then. M134 is all about volume of fire, as it spews streams of 7.62X51 ammo at up to 6,000 rounds per...

Russia's Giant Soviet Era Lightning Machine Is Terrifying
About 40 miles outside of Moscow, in a secluded forest near a quiet town, sits a maze of towering Tesla Coil looking generators and conduits that seem anything but terrestrial. This lightning machine, the only of its kind, now sits abandoned... sort of. Built in the 1970s by the Russia's...

This Nutty Bastard Rode A Honda Grom From Portland To Alaska
We like the Honda Grom, but we'll never love it like Nathan Rogers. In some kind of monkey bike-induced lunacy, he left Portland earlier this summer and headed north. Two weeks later, he rolled into Alaska. It'll take twice as long for his ass and knees to recover, so he...
