Now That I Think About It, I Do Need This WRX-Engined Dino 308GT4 in My Life
Now That I Think About It, I Do Need This WRX-Engined Dino 308GT4 in My Life-February 2024

What’s better than the ? If you ask me, it’s putting the WRX’s wonderful turbo boxer engine into something that’s small and light and cool and isn’t a four-door sedan with a giant wing. I have long dreamed of swapping a WRX motor into a VW Karmann-Ghia, but may be an even better idea.

This is the first time I’ve seen this engine put into that car, and I have to say I love the idea. Yes, it loses the Ferrari-sourced 3.0-liter V8, but which would you rather work on and try to get parts for? That, or a JDM-sourced Subaru motor that’s far easier and cheaper wrench on?

Plus, this motor is said to now put out 280 horsepower, which in the Dino’s scant 2,540-pound body has to move with real vigor. The gearbox is also a Subaru five-speed manual.

The seller says they bought the car with no motor or transmission, and since the swap it’s remained largely stock otherwise. It needs some work—what old project car doesn’t?—on things like the window motors and wipers. The speedometer also doesn’t work with the current engine.

Here’s a walkaround video with the motor running:

It’s far from perfect for any old Ferrari, but that’s kind of the point here. This seems like a weird, tough old beast that could be a lot of fun to drive and work on for the right person.

And that right person had better have $29,500 free, . I’m pretty sure that’s on the steep side, but I also know the right weirdo out there is willing to go for it. I kind of want it in my life now too.

Any takers?

The 2019 Subaru WRX STI S209 Has So Much Grip Even Race Car Drivers Struggle To Get It Sideways
The U.S. government has finally allowed —Subaru’s elite squad of performance engineers—to build a tricked-out WRX for the American market, and the result is an incredibly sticky track-slayer. It’s the 341 horsepower , and it has so much grip even professional rally drivers will struggle to get it sideways. (...

At $3,500, Could This 1987 Porsche 924S Make You Forget Your 944 Dreams?
Today’s 924 is a bit of an anomaly. Being the S it shares the 944’s engine, but not its brute looks. That makes it a bit lighter, and just maybe, a good bit better of a deal. The kit and component car community is like Cosplay, but for cars....

Why I Actually Prefer The BMW Z4 To The 2020 Toyota Supra
Toyota says the feels different to drive than its mechanical twin, the M40i. Actually, since the start, both carmakers have been hammering about how distinguished each car is, telling us they went off their own separate ways once the shared architecture was laid out. I’ve been tracking this BMW-Toyota love...

Of All Truck-Looking SUVs The Kia Telluride Feels The Least Truckish
I didn’t have much time with the , but a few laps around town was enough to notice that it feels very low and long from the driver’s seat, much more so than any other truck-looking SUV I’ve been in lately. It’s the most disparate vehicle on a scale...

You’ve probably never heard of today’s LaDawri, but now that you have, you likely won’t be able to forget it either. Let’s see if this rare, Corvair-powered kit car from the past comes with a price that’s just as memorable. As I noted near the end of our happy...

After more than seven years of production, the finally has another high-performance electric sedan to compete against: the 2020 . In Turbo S form, it’s a 750-horsepower all-wheel drive EV that can rocket from zero to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds. It isn’t perfect, but after driving it over...
