Now That's Some Good Patina
Now That's Some Good Patina-November 2024

It seems these days everyone is worried about their collector cars having as few miles as possible on the odometer. They want to hold things as objets d’art, rather than their intended purpose as machine to move humans around on roads. I reject the notion that enthusiasts should preserve things as perfect copies of how they left the factory. I’d much rather put a few hundred thousand miles road tripping in a machine like this Ford Country Sedan wagon.

Yet again I find myself cruising around Craigslist armed with nothing but the search term “Project”. It’s like a roulette wheel that only turns up winners. You simply can’t go wrong buying someone else’s unfinished project. Of course that is a joke, I don’t really recommend taking this tack. But, this particular project car just might be the exception that proves the rule.

This 1965 American Boat with a way way back looks to be largely intact. If you can give the car a mechanical re-fresh, say with a modern engine and transmission, or dare I say it EV swap, but leave the rest of the car alone and drive it like this for the rest of time, it would be fantastic. It looks like a thing that has served its duty well for decades, and that’s what things are for. Not only would a fresh repaint be a denial of the car’s life lived, but it would simply look worse. It deserves to keep its well earned patina.

Okay, so the interior needs a little work, and the drivetrain is junk, but you can get . That seems like a good starting point, but I’d probably offer a little less. Either way, it’s damn cool, and deserves to be on the road again.

Here’s what the seller has to say:

This one we bought from an estate sale years ago. It needs a powertrain, interior and some trim. It has great patina without much real rust issues. Floor pans are in great shape! This is just a patina project to buy, get an engine in and cruise. Give us a call with any questions! [phone number redacted]

The 2019 Porsche GT3 RS Is The Exception To The Rules Of Physics
For those who say a Porsche 911 Carrera S, GTS, Turbo or Turbo S are simply not enough, there are the GT2 and GT3 models. They’re insane, overpowered, meant for the race track and come with the six-figure price tags to match. And the , somehow, is on a whole...

At $15,250, Could This 2003 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Get You To Pony Up?
Ford’s Mustang has always been a survivor. And, as today’s Mach 1 proves, its special edition models keep coming back in zombie-like fashion. Will this S95’s price however, still prove worth waking the dead? In Greek myth, the Sirens were a race of beach babes who lured unwitting sailors to...

The and its twin the have been go-to picks for “fun and affordable” forever. After a week in the limited production range topping $33,000 , I’ve made some realizations about this car. (: Subaru allowed me to borrow a BRZ tS for a week for a shakedown. While doing so,...

The 2018 Volvo S90 Is The Thoughtful Luxury Sedan
The will make you feel fancier just by sitting in it. Between its clean Swedish lines and ornamental buttons, you may leave this car wondering why any other luxury car exists. If it’s not as fancy as the Volvo, just take it away. It is unworthy of carrying you. (:...

I Want To Sell My BMW And Replace It With A Rally Car! What Car Should I Buy?
Austin, who is surprisingly from Texas, has a BMW that he wants to sell and use the proceeds for something that he can transform into a machine that’s part daily driver and part rally-racer. This is a goal we can all support, so what car should he buy? (Welcome back...

At $23,500, Could This Hayabusa-Powered 2002 Smart ForTwo Be For You?
With its estimated 173-horsepower, today’s ‘Smartacus’ packs about four-times the ponies of a stock ForTwo. Let’s see if this wild custom’s price is also a factor too high. As I noted in the comments on last Friday’s, I’ve owned two of Ford’s ponies over the years. One of them was...
