When we talk about automotive scholarships, we’re generally talking about a scholarship for engineering, design, or trade elements. But the Pebble Beach Concours—yes, the folks behind the really high-end car show—has created a scholarship for the people interested in automotive communications: journalism, PR, social media, and more.

I don’t think it’s easy to see why someone like me would be excited by that, but it’s what Pebble Beach is doing with the John Lamm Scholarship. Lamm was an exceptional automotive journalist and photographer whose career lasted nearly fifty years before he died at age 76 in October of this year. If you’ve heard of a car magazine, Lamm has probably written for it.

From :

In addition to creating and caring for great cars, we need people who can capture their stories and convey them to future generations. That’s what John did so well for decades, with camera and pen and computer. He photographed and wrote about great cars — as well as the people who made history with them. He also did all he could to connect car people. He was both a communicator and a community builder.

In tribute to John, and in remembrance of the other automotive journalists we’ve lost in recent years (Denise McCluggage, Paul Ingrassia and Thos Bryant spring to mind immediately), we want to do all we can to encourage the car communicators of the future.

While there are currently no details regarding candidates, monetary funds, or distribution, the scholarship is accepting donations and has already brought in some from Ford.

I’m all here for anyone looking to pave the way for a future generation of folks in the communications field—especially in an era where education is so expensive and opportunities are held close to the chest.

Pebble Beach also offers the for students interested in automotive arts and technical programs, along with the designed to fund students in restoration programs.

The Infiniti G Was A Better Four Door Sports Car
There was a time when the Nissan Maxima could have been considered, dare I say, cool. But then came along its way cooler cousin, the Infiniti G35, the Japanese attempt to take on the BMW 3 Series in the sport sedan wars of the ‘00s. And it successfully did...

We Asked An Expert If Pictures Posted On Reddit Are Really Of A Legendary Lost Bugatti
Ever heard of ? The name just means “the black car,” but this black car was very special, because it was one of four Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantics built, and of those four, three are still accounted for. No one knows what happened to the fourth one, the...

I'm Driving Across America Again But This Time I Almost Have A Plan
When I , I largely did it by making things up as I went, so committed was I to the idea that the best road trips are spontaneous ones. That decision, in retrospect, was what some may call “stupid,” given that it led me down the God-forsaken highways of...

You Get One Guess Which Car Company Is Complaining About Having To Make EVs
We should take it seriously when the boss of Stellantis complains about the costs of transitioning to EVs, but I’m not going to be surprised about it either. All that and more in for December 1, 2021. Stellantis is a huge mix of international car companies, combining top manufacturers...

Blip: Hey, Look At That
I really like this old Mini brochure page for both that wonderful loose-yet-tight midcentury illustration style, with the limited spot color, but mostly because the look on the guy’s face in the passenger seat there is the face you’d make if you saw a squirrel wearing a little hat...

This Chinese Carmaker Is Building Cars From Histories That Never Happened
I think it’s well understood that what generally qualifies as the best sort of automotive design are ideas that are new, novel, and break some new ground, always moving forward, always advancing. That’s all great, but when it comes to stuff people just like, the rules are pretty different....
