Product Review – Letstrack Premium – Installation

Last month we introduced you to the Letstrack GPS tracker and it’s unboxing. The product we have is the LT Premium which works well for fleet management in areas with sporadic network apart from personal use. The standard features of the device were already mentioned in the previous report and you can read all about it over here.

Now when we received the box, we were told that Letstrack is a simple plug and play device. But it didn’t exactly turn out to be a DIY which can be done by anyone. Here is a detailed installation report of Letstrack Premium before we head out and test it in the real world.

Not a DIY

For installation of the Letstrack in the vehicle, the technician had to remove the panel below the steering wheel where the OBD2 port is placed. There were three main connections to be made.

First, the main wire was connected to the ignition. This connection controls the data regarding the vehicle start-stop function, thus alerting the user if the vehicle is started through unauthorised means. It also records trip data depending on the number of stops taken and when the vehicle was used. One more function this connection provides is that Letstrack app can allow the owner to remotely switch off the engine in case of a wrong direction by the driver or any abrupt behaviour of the vehicle with the touch of a button. Even the speed limit and driver behaviour – which is an important feature of Letstrack – is monitored through this connection.

The second connection was earth. This was connected to the earth pin of the vehicle’s electric harness.

The third connection was to the air condition control. The connection is made to the car’s compressor and thus helps monitor the vehicles AC usage. The AC alarm on the app sends a notification to the owner whenever the AC is switched On/Off. This feature is helpful for people who hire drivers for the vehicles.

The SOS button fitted at the bottom of the steering wheel – when pressed by the driver – send an alarm on the owners mobile. This is useful if the vehicle is trapped in an unpleasant or sticky situation.

The user data is stored in the black coloured device. This device is tucked below the steering column and zip-tied in place. The off-line data recorded on this unit is uploaded to servers. There is a 24-hour history record available at any point in time. Even the parking location is logged, which is useful for fleet owners and locating vehicles in vast parking lots. All this information is saved in this black box. Even if the device is illicitly disconnected, a notification will be sent using the inbuilt battery. The device is waterproof and also sends notification if the vehicle is towed away. This feature works even when the engine is switched off.

In the next report, we’ll be testing the Letstrack mobile application and see how well it performs under different conditions.
