What is it?

A magnetic phone mount. I had been wanting one for my car ever since the CarThrottle video went viral, but I wasn’t able to find the right one. Luckily, Stuffcool sent us this ‘Mag Hold’ to test and at the first glance, it does look solid. But looks can be deceiving and so, here is what we think of the Mag Hold.

What is in the box?

The see-through packaging comes with the Mag Hold, the installation guide pamphlet and two metal plates with 3M adhesive. The Mag Hold looks quality with the glossy plastic base and the matte finish on the stem and the magnet face while the clean design makes it look attractive. We haven’t seen any fade or scratches on the body or the magnet surface and that is one tick in the right box for us.

How to install?

Installation of the Mag Hold is pretty intuitive. It has a suction mount that needs a plain surface for it to hold properly. The flexible plastic is quite sticky in itself and it doesn’t need that perfect juggling trick of mounting it with one hand and fastening the suction cup with the other.

Once set in its position, all you have to do is press the suction lever which creates the vacuum hold. Just make sure that the surface is clean before you mount it for the vacuum to hold up properly.

The sticky plates can be pasted on the back of the phone using the adhesive. And because they are quite thin, they can be slid inside the phone, between the battery and the cover if the back cover of the phone opens. On the other hand, people who like to have a phone cover not even stick the plates. Just slide the plate between the phone and the cover and it is good to go. And this way, you can transfer it to the next phone and the next one and so on.

How does it work?

The Mag Hold works as seamlessly as it looks. The magnet is quite strong and holds onto the phone instantly. For first time users, the paranoia of the phone falling is always there, but Stuffcool can be trusted without bothering to read the fine print or those little ‘conditions apply’ stars in the corners.

We drove it at high-speeds, medium-bad roads and the mount held on to the phone always. Unless you are rallying through broken trails or blasting through bad roads, the phone is quite secure. And that is because this mount has been designed to hold tablets up to 9.7 inches in size. It can mount an iPad or a Kindle as well. We would, however, strictly recommend against it because a device of such size used while driving is always a distraction and also eats into a lot of your visibility from the cockpit, thus becoming in a safety hazard.

Finally, once the phone is mounted, the exact position can be fine-tuned using the ball-socket pivot. Once the desired position is attained, you can fix it by tightening the socket-sleeve.
