Putin Dives Deeper Into Bond Villain Territory, Explores Black Sea In Sub-May 2024

A Byzantine shipwreck from roughly 1,000 years ago was discovered on the floor of the Black Sea in May, which was apparently so fascinating to Russian President Vladimir Putin that he decided to check it out for himself. (You can do stuff like that when you’re Putin.)

During his visit to the Crimean peninsula, which he , Putin boarded a tiny submersible and plunged into the abyss.

While roving 272 feet down on the seafloor, the Russian President was said to be in radio contact with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, to whom he communicated his intent to illustrate “how deep our historical roots are.” Evidently, he needed to personally see the shipwreck to make this point.

This isn’t Putin’s first sub-surface excursion, having explored a 19th century shipwreck in the in 2013 as well as (the world’s deepest freshwater lake) in 2009.

As the world knows, he’s never been one to shy away from action-oriented photo opportunities, having flown in a , taken a back seat ride in an , piloted a , driven a , and even .

Lest we forget there was also that time he went , for some reason.

With fighting in Ukraine continuing to rage month after month and the Russian economy reeling from sanctions and devaluation of the ruble, it is difficult to make sense of Putin’s priorities.

In his attempt to link Russia’s history with the Byzantine shipwreck, he may have inadvertently portrayed himself as completely disconnected from more pressing issues. Then again, doing so could have been his plan all along (touches pinkie to mouth plus diabolical laugh).

The Navy's Most Vital And Secretive Submarine Base Is In... Idaho?!?
The US Navy's submarine bases are some of the most high-security installations in the world, but one of their most important and shadowy submarine outposts is not located along the ocean, but rather in a lake in landlocked Idaho. The Navy's Acoustic Research Detachment (ARD) at Bayview, Idaho, which is...

This Is What A BBQ'd Russian 5th Generation Fighter Looks Like
One of Russia's Sukhoi T-50 prototypes had a very bad day recently, catching fire at the end of a test sortie and the resulting damage is pretty horrific. It is not clear what exactly caused the fire, but the PAK-FA program, although appearing to be moving along swiftly, has its...

Watch George HW Bush Jump Out Of A Helicopter For His 90th Bday!
Once again the ex-Commander In Chief, Vice President, CIA Director and TBM Avenger pilot took a leap out of a perfectly good aircraft to celebrate his birthday, of which this is his 90th. President Bush leaped out of a helicopter hovering at 6,000 over Kenibunkport, Maine attached to an ex-US...

The Right Fighter For Canada Is The Super Hornet, Not The F-35
Canada's process for selecting a future fighter to replace its CF-18 Hornets has been a rocky one, with the F-35 option doing what it seems to do best: Making lots of controversy. All the while the most logical option, Boeing's Super Hornet Advanced is waiting in the wings. Up until...

Watch This EA-6B Prowler Pilot's View Of A Catapult Launch
The EA-6B Prowler, the last of the true Grumman Navy iron, is currently on She has been almost entirely replaced by the way more modern E/A-18G Growler, although the USMC will continue to fly a couple dozen of these "flying frying pans" until the end of the decade. You've gotta...
