QOTD: How's Your COVID Project?
QOTD: How's Your COVID Project?-November 2024

2002 WRX Wagon

About this time last year, I bought the above wagon on one of those janky auction sites. I’m generally pretty cautious when it comes to car buying, but in a moment of recklessness, I entered what I thought was a lowball bid and hit the confirm button. The car ended up being pretty thrashed, but over the winter and into the early days of COVID, I practiced welding patches in the body and fixed a bunch of fiddly stuff before selling it to my cousin’s husband at a healthy loss. He put a bunch more work into it and it looks pretty good now.

But in the positive column, it totally derailed the Willys rewiring project and the 911 recommission project that I’d been making good progress on. Maybe you did better.

What about you, did you accomplish anything before your brain started melting or are you still getting that mix of guilt and regret that only a stalled car project can bring?

Mercedes’s parent company, Daimler, made €7.6 billion (or about $8.4 billion) in profit last year. But as we’re all in the midst of an electric car revolution, Daimler has apparently decided that some heads must roll, and it’s cutting at least 10,000 jobs to facilitate the switch. And the...

It’s common knowledge that the oldest gasoline-powered internal combustion automobile is a German one, the 1885 Benz Patent-Motorwagen. That’s all great, but if you want to drive it, you better head to a private track. That’s because it’s not only a priceless piece of history, it’s also not street legal....

BMW Is Killing Its Range-Extending Hybrid But Maybe It Shouldn't
BMW introduced the range-extending hybrid hatchback back in 2014 to offer a longer-range alternative to the fully-electric i3's measly 80-mile range at the time. A few short years later, the company confirmed it’s done with range-extending hybrids for good. To catch you up, a range-extending hybrid, also known as...
