QOTD: What Car Would You Overspend On?-September 2024

Image for article titled QOTD: What Car Would You Overspend On?

Back in the heady days of the early 2000s collector car boom, I watched, astonished, as someone paid $126,000 (IIRC) for an Amphicar. As the news came in by telegraph, it dawned on Amphicar owners all over the country that their Amphicar was suddenly a blue chip collectable.

The Acura Integra Type R is not an Amphicar, it’s much better on the road than an Amphicar and it may only be slightly worse in the water.

It may also be at the beginning of it’s upward swing in value. But, people were still shocked when the one pictured above hit $58,500 on Bring a Trailer a while back. But that’s the thing about larger than expected auction sales, it just takes two or more bidders who really want the car.

Which brings me to the Question of The Day: Is there a car that you’re sure is just starting to realize its potential? Is there something you’re irrationally in love with? What car is worth getting into a bidding war for you?

Half-Eleven Is The V8-Powered Porsche Hot Rod You Never Knew You Wanted
The Half11 project has been a several-year process behind . The idea behind this ridiculous car is the kind of thing only a kid could dream up, as they long ago dreamed about smashing a 911 and an IndyCar together. They started with the rusty shell of an old...

BYD’s Dolphin Is A Cheap EV With A Striking Organic Interior Design
Today I was watching CarGurus UK’s video review of the Dolphin, an electric hatchback with a base price in the U.K. of around £26,000, the equivalent of about $33,000. Current interior trends are leaning toward and deletion of physical switchgear, but the BYD Dolphin proves two things – car...

You Had To Square Dance In School Because Henry Ford Hated Jazz
I’m not sure if they torture kids like this still, but the worst four-week period of my 6th grade life was our unit on square dancing in gym class. And wouldn’t you know it? One of the worst experiences of my academic life — and possibly yours as well...

If You're Looking To STI-Swap And Lift A Subaru Forester For Off-Road Adventures, Then Boy Do I Have The Car For You
Just based on the photo shown here, you might assume I have a cool old Subaru Forester. Unfortunately for me, the truth is that I used to have a cool old Forester. As the license plate suggests, that picture was taken back when I lived in California. It was...

Stop Being Horny For The Cars
Stop Being Horny For The Cars
is, by most accounts, a good-looking grand tourer. With more than 600 horsepower and a zero-to-60 time in the low three second range, it’s undeniably quick, and apparently, it’s quite fun to drive. What it is not, however, is a sexy, curvaceous Italian that’s finally gone topless. Talking about...
