We here at Jalopnik have already firmly established that drone cams in racing are objectively . But is stepping up the game for this weekend’s race at Talladega by introducing the Alta 8, the most advanced and terrifying-looking drone to be used as part of an on-air broadcast.

The is an absurd piece of machinery. It has a five-axis camera stabilization, which basically means this drone can be buffeted by all kinds of wind and look like it’s sitting completely stable. I won’t bore you with its full list of impressive —basically all you need to know is that this particular model costs almost $18,000 because it’s the film camera equivalent of the drone you’d buy your kiddos.

This isn’t the first time NASCAR has used a drone—they’ve been using them since the start of the —but it’s the first time they’ve used one this ridiculously nice.

I’m hoping they get creative with it and make the most out of the Alta 8 (let’s get up close and personal with the cars!!!) but I have a feeling no-fun NASCAR isn’t going to let that happen unless this thing has been, like, wind-tunnel tested to ensure that it won’t accidentally give up the ghost while hovering over the track. I doubt NASCAR officials want to be caused by bits of drone laying on the track.

That said, there is something very NASCAR about camera equipment fucking up a race. The drone could go down in infamy, right next to the that stopped the Coke 600.

This Weird Also-Ran Le Mans Prototype Class Desperately Needs Someone To Care
Ginetta, a British marque so semi-obscure that you may have forgotten that people still race Ginettas all the time, its plan to add teams in the World Endurance Championship’s LMP1 privateer class starting in 2018. That’s good, because there’s only one entry in LMP1 privateer this year. Sad! I say...

This Is How You Say 'Hi, Mom' From The Dakar Rally
Everyone’s a ham for the camera, but how many of you can wave at the cameras while flying along at 112 mph in the sand? French rider Adrien Van Beveren waved for the cameras atop his Yamaha during Stage 2 of this year’s Dakar Rally. Stage 2 concluded yesterday, and...

When You Really Only Care About Your Bumper
When You Really Only Care About Your Bumper
Look, the rest of the car—I can take it or leave it. Just attach the tow hook to the bumper. That’s all I want back if I get stuck out on track. Don’t bother attaching the hook to anything structural on the car itself that might accidentally pull the whole...

Just Sit Back And Watch This Cracked-Out Alfa Romeo 4C Storm Up A Hill
I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to divine the regulations of hillclimb events, or lack thereof. It seems to be the last bastion of “nearly anything goes” in terms of power and aerodynamics. Do I care about what those specific rules are? Hell naw. Here’s a cracked-out and roided-up...
