The federal gas tax was last raised in 1993 and, anytime anyone , it goes nowhere. A bipartisan group of lawmakers in Washington now say it is at least time to think about it.

Raising the gas tax is not as radical an idea you might think, with one survey last year if the money was for infrastructure maintenance. That number fell to 44 percent when respondents were told the money would go for “transportation” instead. The study, an annual survey by the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University, also noted the following:

Support for raising the gas tax has risen slowly but steadily since 2010 ... The increases range from 8 to 20 percentage points.

So, raising the gas tax: Not radical, even popular depending on how it’s spent. Which made it a little curious when the Biden administration after unveiling its , because you might think that arguing to raise the gas tax to help fund an infrastructure rebuild would be an idea that could get some traction.

, a group of 58 lawmakers in Congress agree, releasing a report Friday proposing such a thing.

The group of 58 lawmakers, dubbed the Problem Solvers Caucus, proposed indexing gas and diesel taxes to inflation, highway construction costs, fuel-economy standards, or some combination of the three in a report on infrastructure released Friday. The report lays out other possible fee increases, including a vehicle-miles traveled tax that would collect revenue from electric vehicles.

[...]

While the bipartisan group doesn’t lay out specific funding levels, it does call for federal investments in rail, water infrastructure, and broadband. They propose easing regulations on approving new projects and incentivizing more private investment in infrastructure, among other measures.

You can read their report in full , but the important thing is not that this proposal will go anywhere — it probably won’t. The important thing is moving a raise of the gas tax inside , if it isn’t there already. Because we do need to fix America’s infrastructure; we also need to incentivize behaviors that decrease harmful emissions on a broad scale. Raising the gas tax can help do both.

What's Your Gas Shortage Story?
What's Your Gas Shortage Story?
Back in the ‘70s, waiting for gas wasn’t an uncommon experience, from what I understand. I wasn’t around back then so I don’t know for sure, but many of the people I know who were alive back in the ‘70s knew the experience all too well. My grandparents have...

The C8 Corvette Isn't As Good On Gas As The C7 Was: Report
The Corvette has always stood as a symbol of attainable American sports car values. It’s got a roaring V8, lots of bare-chested torque, and handling that can compete with the Yurpeens for a lot less green. And since the C5 generation at least, it’s been able to do that...

The First Generation 4Runner Was A Different, And In Some Ways Better 4Runner
There used to be lots of options for people who wanted an SUV with a removable top. The Ford Bronco, International Harvester Scout, Chevy Blazer, Dodge Ramcharger, and the Suzuki Samurai and Sidekick all had removable tops at one point. The options are much more limited these days thanks...

Watch A Couple Of Professional Hooligans Terrorize Los Angeles On Two Wheels
When Los Angeles traffic has you down, the best answer is always two wheels. Sure, it’s a bit more [okay, significantly more] dangerous, but you can lane-split and get to your destination in half the time. But what about when you want to have a little more fun with...

Even A Fake Ferrari 250 GT Is Worth More Than A House
A replica Ferrari 250 GT California used in the 80s film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” sold at auction last week for almost $400,000. That seems like an awful lot of cash for a replica, especially considering it was one of three used for the movie, and it isn’t even...
