Introduction

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso Left Side View

SUVs and crossovers are all the rage in our Indian market these days. Actually buyers are wanting more of gravel travel cars. And if that demand is anything to go buy in the entry-level segment, the Renault Kwid and Maruti S-Presso bring in the right proposition. We tested and compared the AMT versions of these two.

We've followed a little scientific approach denoted by V-Box figures. These give an idea of how these cars respond when you put the foot down on the accelerator. Also, it's more of an overall indication of how these cars sprint in the city and highway conditions.

Acceleration

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso Left Front Three Quarter

A. Acceleration

0-60kmph

0-100kmph

Both these cars employ a similar set-up of powertrains with a three-cylinder petrol engine mated to a five-speed AMT. The S-Presso's 67bhp 1.0-litre K10B mill helped it register a 0-60kmph sprint time of 6.49 seconds, and a 0-100kmph time of 15.37 seconds. The Kwid's 1.0-litre petrol motor also churns out 67bhp and managed to accelerate to 60kmph in 8.42 seconds, and to 100kmph from standstill in 18.46 seconds.

Roll on times

B. Roll on times

20-80kmph in in kick-down

40-100kmph in kick-down

Even it terms of overall weight, both of these are similar with the S-Presso weighing 770kg and the Kwid 760kg. But do note, the S-Presso's torque of 90Nm is rated at 3,500rpm while the Kwid's 91Nm of torque at 4,500rpm. As a result, this Maruti put up a 9.48 seconds time against the Renault's 10.34 seconds in the 20-80kmph in kick-down. Even in the 40-100kmph run in kick-down, the S-Presso managed to clock it in 11.12 seconds, while the Kwid was a little slower at 14.07 seconds.

Conclusion

It's quite interesting to see how these cars fared in our tests and hopefully our purpose of setting these times is clear. If not, for more clarity and analysis, you can click here for the comprehensive road test comparison of the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso AMT and the Renault Kwid AMT.
