As Jalopnik’s resident car-buying expert and a professional car shopper, I get emails. Lots of emails. I’ve picked a few of your questions and will try to help out. This week we are discussing using a trade as leverage for a better deal, and whether or not a dealer will remove aftermarket items.

“I’m shopping for a new Nissan Rogue and I have yet to find a dealer in my area give me anything off the sticker price. I know I might be able to find a better deal with a different car, but this is the one I want. I have a 2016 Forester that is paid off, and that got me thinking if everyone is selling for MSRP should I just see who will give me the most for my trade?”

This is absolutely a good strategy in this current market especially since you have a trade-in that is relatively recent and highly desirable. The first thing I would tell you is before you start having the dealers pit trade offers against each other, get some additional bids on your Subaru from Carvana, Vroom, and Carmax. I’ve had a number of clients get higher offers from those outfits than the dealerships, but having those bids may give you additional leverage for your Forester.

What you’ll want to avoid are the dealers that say “We can’t give you an offer until you bring it in for us to see it.” While it’s understandable the dealer wants to inspect the car before they put a number on it, you don’t want to be driving around to three or four dealers spending hours at each store waiting for your trade offer. Once you get your itemized prices on the Rogue in writing, inform each dealer of your best offer from Carvana, Vroom, and CarMax and see who is willing to match or beat before you take the trip.

Next up, would a dealer be willing to remove an aftermarket part on a used car prior to purchase?

“I’m looking at a used car and it has a non-factory trailer hitch. Is it inappropriate to ask a dealer for an aftermarket accessory to be removed as a condition for purchasing?”

This request is not “inappropriate” but it’s up to them as to whether or not they want to adhere to that offer. If removing the hitch is fairly easy I don’t see why they wouldn’t, but keep in mind they have to pay their technicians to perform these tasks. So if this is something that requires removing the bumper and messing with electronics, that is going to be costly for the dealer and the math may not make sense for them.

At $13,900, Could This Hot 1985 Pontiac Fiero Light Your Fire?
At $13,900, Could This Hot 1985 Pontiac Fiero Light Your Fire?
Today’s Fiero sports its original, introductory bodywork, which I just so happen to think is its best looking. That’s about the only thing original about this LS3-equipped car, so let’s figure out if its price is original gangster. There are certain incomprehensible incongruences in the automotive world. For instance, why...

I Found A Way To Have Fun In The 2017 Toyota RAV4: Off-Road The Shit Out Of It
The sitting in front of me covered in bugs (turns out New England has a lot of bugs) certainly did not fit the archetype of what I thought of as a “rally car.” Populating the roads running along the rolling hills of Maine and New Hampshire I had spotted the...

Cadillac's Super Cruise Makes The Self-Driving Future Seem Possible
The building blocks for autonomous cars are already here, but so far the biggest step into that world for actual consumers has been Tesla’s . Now General Motors is going there too with a semiautonomous highway driving feature called Super Cruise, available on the new . Questions about how it...

At $4,000, Does This 2001 Audi TT Drophead Make You Green With Envy?
The Audi TT once had an issue with its high speed handling. That had supposedly been addressed by the time today’s convertible was built, however. We’ll still need to address how to handle the price tag on this very green German machine. Have you ever heard of “chrome cancer?” That’s...

At $8,000, Could This 2006 Ford Focus ZX3 Turn You Into A Roush-About?
You would probably never go looking for a decade-old Ford Focus, they’re just not all that desirable. Today’s Roush Stage 1 is a looker, and, oddly enough, desirable. Let’s see if its price is also something we can all focus on. When I was but a wee lad I built...

At $1,800, Could This 1969 Triumph TR6 Project Be The Perfect Cure For Cabin Fever This Winter?
We all know that it’s a bad idea to buy someone else’s project, but what about buying your own project? Today’s TR6 is just that opportunity, that is if its price proves project oriented. You know, I really don’t get certain holiday songs. I mean, I’m totally down with Wham’s...
