Someone Please Buy This Honda Del Sol Trans Top So I Don't Have To
Someone Please Buy This Honda Del Sol Trans Top So I Don't Have To-September 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:47

I have extolled the glories of the before. I have praised its wonder, celebrated its roof-iness. Now there’s one for sale in the United States, in vaunted SiR trim, no less. And you need to buy it because I cannot. It would be bad for my life.

Virginia-based JDM car importer (why are they all based in Virginia?) just got this sweet little 1992 Honda Del Sol SiR in, and it filled with such an insatiable desire for it then I immediately had to shut the page. But then I had to look again, because it is so good.

(The white one pictured up top is not the one for sale, the one for sale is the red one, I just put the white one up top because for reasons I cannot BEGIN to fathom, Japanese Classics has not included a video of the awesome Trans Top in action.)

As I noted the last time I obsessed over the Trans Top, it completely revolutionized the notion of a mere “targa” top that came before it. Instead of using your arms to lift the roof off, like some sort of savage, the Trans Top had little robot arms to lift the roof off for you. It’s a car from 2092, built right in 1992.

The one that Japanese Classics has is also an SiR model, which I already noted but which you glossed over because you are too distracted by that glorious little robot who lives in the trunk. The SiR, with its 170 horsepower, was one of the first production cars to squeeze out over 100 horsepower per liter of engine displacement, and it buzzed all the way up to a still-impressive 8,200 RPM. Plus it’s got a vaunted Honda five-speed manual transmission.

These things are supposedly wildly hilarious and fun because of that, and it has a little robot in the trunk to take your top off for you.

What more could you want?

Someone else buy this thing so that I don’t have to. I really have enough cars in my life right now. Just go on and buy it. And then let me drive it.

At $22,800, Might This Crazy Mixed Up 2002 Chevy Corvette Z06 Be A Straight Up Deal?
At $22,800, Might This Crazy Mixed Up 2002 Chevy Corvette Z06 Be A Straight Up Deal?
The seller of today’s Corvette seems to be shy a zero on the mileage in his headline. He’s less shy in his effusive praise of the car’s mods, but should those mods mean its price should drop a digit too? As Animal House’s Dean Wormer once so eloquently espoused, ‘fat,...

The $1 Million McLaren Senna Made My Face Muscles Try To Escape
A quick glance at the speedo in the $1 million, 789 horsepower showed I was knocking on 300 kph, and quick brain math meant that was nearing 186 mph. My foot stayed planted on the gas. Then at the 200 meter board… I stood on the brakes to make turn...

At $35,900, Would You Put Your Body Into This Widebody 2005 Lotus Elise?
The seller of today’s custom Elise says he’s in no hurry to sell. That’s despite the car looking hurry-up as hell. Let’s see if his price has you hurrying to empty your wallet. In the song My Wife by the Who, John Entwistle bemoans the prospect of having to face...

I Dumped My High-Mileage BMW M5 For A Honda S2000 And I Have Seen The Light
I had a 2006 BMW M5 with more than 180,000 miles dialed up in my possession the past four months or so. Well, until Sunday. It was fast, loud, fun to drive, and honestly, in pretty desperate need of repair. Instead of doing those repairs, I decided I’d trade the...

Watch Out For Dealers Who Say The Price Of The Car Depends On Your Credit
Some dealers don’t like to play ball with this Even so, most know that if they refuse online price quotes they will lose sales, but some will send you numbers only to try to pull some tricks later—like altering the price due to your credit score. I was shopping for...
