The quickly earned a reputation for safety. Our look at the engineering of the crossover, which is based on the 3, revealed even more structural improvements. Now Tesla claims the Model Y is the safest SUV ever tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for rollover risk.

NHTSA’s assessment “determined that Model Y has a rollover risk of 7.9%, the lowest of any SUV recorded to date by the organization,” . This information does not appear to be immediately available in NHTSA’s online records, however, and it’s unclear whether Tesla was supposed to disclose such detailed information.

Typically, NHTSA only categorizes its crash test results in relatively vague terms. Vehicles are selectively chosen year-to-year for crash testing, and then are assigned a star rating based on the results, with the top award being a 5-star rating. Sometimes these ratings are divided into category, but NHTSA does not traditionally directly compare specific data points like Tesla is attempting to do here, at least not officially. Jalopnik reached out to NHSTA for more information about Tesla’s claim and disclosure and will update when we know more.

The specific trim involved in the NHTSA test referenced by Tesla was equipped as a Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive, and it earned a five-star rating in every testing category.

Here’s some alleged detail of the testing done on the Model Y and some insight into how the Model Y’s design contributes to such an impressive result from Tesla’s press release:

Rollovers significantly increase the risk of injury during an accident. To calculate rollover resistance in NHTSA’s test, Model Y is parked on a suspended platform that rotates in all directions to physically measure center of gravity and moments of inertia. NHTSA’s assessment determined that Model Y has a rollover risk of 7.9%, the lowest of any SUV recorded to date by the organization.

As with all Tesla vehicles, Model Y’s architecture is fundamentally designed to have a very low center of gravity, which is accomplished by strategically placing its heavy battery pack and electric motors low down in the vehicle.

Back in 2018, Elon Musk preemptively announced the Tesla Model 3 had the lowest probability of injury, citing then-upcoming results of NHTSA testing. Musk was . Is that what he’s doing again? Does it really matter? The car is safe. Maybe, one day, another car will be safer and the Model Y will have to fight for its name, but today doesn’t have to be that day.

This brochure is for the ambulance version of the ZIM, also known as the GAZ-12 ZIM, notable as the first GAZ to have their jumping deer hood ornament. The stretchers were loaded through the trunk opening on this ambulance version, something that seems awkward, but doesn’t look too bad:...

Gran Turismo 7 Is Designed To Inspire The Next Generation Of Car Enthusiasts Just As It Inspired You
With exactly 30 days between now and March 4, Gran Turismo 7 is firmly in the home stretch. That’s exciting and pretty unexpected. Save for the initial delay from a vague release sometime in 2021 — which never seemed all that certain anyway — Polyphony Digital announced one release date...

Lewis Hamilton's F1 Car Has Its Own Lego Set, But He's Not In It
Lego’s new Speed Champions series for 2022 is pretty great across the board, and covers a wide gamut of cars — from oldies like the Ferrari 512 M prototype and Lamborghini Countach LP5000 Quattrovalvole to new stuff, like the Lotus Evija and Aston Martin Vantage GT3. Likely the most...

Nobody Wants To Sell You Affordable Cars
Carmakers last year saw profits swell amidst the global pandemic as they cut production down to only their most expensive, profitable vehicles. Now they’re afraid to go back to the cheap stuff. All that and more in for February 2, 2022. I’m going to single out GM here because...

Yet Another Massive Tesla Recall
Tesla acknowledged another potential problem with many of its cars, the first American-made Kia Sportage was built, and GM. All that and more in for February 3, 2022. That is about a third of the number of cars Tesla has built, ever. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that...

That Time I Had An Adventure With A Chevy Spark In South America
Recently, we received the news that I say good riddance. While I never drove the current Spark, I did have a stint behind the wheel of a South American rental Spark. I did not enjoy it. In 2008, my fiancé (now wife) got a scholarship to study at a...
