Welcome to 2023, everybody. As the rest of us are taking down our streamers and disposing of our novelty New Year’s eyeglasses, automakers are carrying out a much less mirthful task: Compiling and releasing their year-end sales numbers for 2022. These are the figures that stock traders love, metrics by which investors justify all those dollars spent betting on their corporation of choice. But for , those numbers seem to be dragging the company even further down.

See, last year, Tesla made some big promises about its sales numbers. It swore deliveries would increase by 50% over 2021, maintaining the perpetual growth that business folks care so deeply about. Yet, by the time the ball dropped, the company was still desperately scrambling to meet those lofty goals.

According to the , Tesla’s global sales target for 2022 was just over 1.4 million cars — just a bit below the number of cars that Honda sells . Yet, according to figures released yesterday, Tesla only managed to move 1.31 million units by the stroke of midnight on December 31.

That’s not for lack of trying on Tesla’s part. The company on Model 3 and Model Y cars at the end of the year, hoping to give its numbers a year-end jolt. Sales did spike, but they weren’t enough to get Tesla across the line it drew.

Investors, of course, generally seem to love it when companies can’t reach their own goals. As of this writing, Tesla is in early-morning trading and still falling. The company’s stock has been collapsing for months, losing over 65% of its value in 2022, and these delivery numbers certainly aren’t assuaging any fears that Elon Musk may be too focused on Twitter to run his car company. Whether this drop forces his attention back to Tesla, and its ever-shrinking valuation, is anyone’s guess.

2014 Aston Martin Vanquish: The Jalopnik Review
Movies tell us that international spies only drive their cars for 20 minutes, max, before they blow up. Can Aston Martin build a flagship grand tourer you'd want to keep longer than that? ( Aston Martin wanted us to drive the Vanquish so bad, that they flew me to New...

For $2,500, If The Shoe Fits, Drive It
The lyrics to the metalcore band On Broken Wings' song Six Hundred Cubic Centimeters includes the line- I've got some questions, and I want them answered. That song is obviously about today's Honda Z600 coupe, and the question they want answered is undoubtably whether or not its price is a...

For $5,000, Is This Audi An Innie?
When you see an ad for a 40-year old one-owner car, you start to wonder what stories it and its owner might share. Today's Audi 100ls is just such a ride, but is its price too tall a tale? The Lincoln of today is a svelte mid-size hybrid that's tidy...

For $50,000, Should This Alfa Get Its Freak On?
The compound word Prototype comes from the Greek prototypon which means primitive form. Today's Alfa GTV is described as such a proto type, but is its price far from either pro or typical? When it was completed, Tod Browning's 1932 film Freaks was banned from exhibition due to its lurid...

For $23,000, Who Needs Swag When You Have Lincoln Style?
Many lament that the Lincoln of today does not reflect the luxury and ostentation of the brand's great products of years past. To rectify this, perhaps the marque should look no further than today's custom '78, that is of course, if its price is not equally lamentable. While not likely...
