Tesla Is Bending On Price
Tesla Is Bending On Price-July 2024

Tesla prides itself on being different than every other car company in the world. It doesn’t advertise, . It doesn’t do profits, . It , except .

Tesla has cut the prices on its cars by up to six percent to induce demand, . That isn’t particularly big but it is notable because for years Tesla’s line about its prices was that it doesn’t negotiate. The car costs what it costs, because obviously Teslas are worth every penny, or some such.

But Tesla is now changing that stance because sales are down amid the pandemic. Per Reuters:

On Wednesday, Tesla website’s showed the starting price for its Model S sedan is now $74,990, down from $79,990.

Its Model X SUVs are now priced at $79,990, from $84,990, and the lowest-priced Model 3 sedan is $2,000 cheaper at $37,990.

Tesla said it will also cut prices in China - as per usual after price adjustments in the United States - by around 4% for the Model X and Model S.

One caveat is that for some customers is going away.

Tesla also said its Supercharger quick-charging service will no longer be free to new customers of its Model S sedans and Model X sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

It wouldn’t be surprising if the lower prices goose sales a little bit, and the timing isn’t so surprising as well, given that June is the last month of the second quarter and I’m sure Tesla will want its second-quarter results to look good, or at least “good” in context.

That said, the fundamentals of the situation don’t seem to have changed all that much. Anyone in the market to buy an $84,990 luxury electric SUV will surely also be in the market to buy a $79,990 luxury electric SUV. And, hell, if you’re already in for that much money you might as well spring for the performance version of the Model X, which starts at $99,990.

What this really shows is Tesla is not all that different from other car companies at the end of the day. It produces cars that it needs to sell in great numbers to satisfy investors and perhaps make a profit. Any other narrative about the company is marketing.

At $34,000, Could This Twin Turbo 2001 Plymouth Prowler Rock Your World?
At $34,000, Could This Twin Turbo 2001 Plymouth Prowler Rock Your World?
With a modern but fairly milquetoast V6 engine, the crazy retro Plymouth Prowler had hot rod looks, but lacked hot rod performance. Today’s bi-turbo edition seeks to rectify that. Maybe its price will prove redemptive as well. In case you hadn’t noticed, the cars with the worst depreciation typically are...

At $24,987, Could This 2014 Cadillac ELR Rock You Down To Electric Avenue?
If you like the Chevy Volt but really need fewer doors and more swank, then the car for you could be something like today’s Cadillac ELR. That is, if its price doesn’t prove to be too shocking. I don’t know why the seller of yesterday’s didn’t dub the rare colored...

A 1993 Mazda RX-7 Was The Most Intense Bone Stock Car I've Driven
Among the plethora of super-sophisticated Japanese sports cars that spawned from the 1990s—the Nissan 300ZX, Acura NSX, Toyota Supra, Mitsubishi 3000GT and so on—the third-generation (chassis code FD) was by far the most focused machine available. Fast, expensive, unreliable, and not all that practical, this curvaceous coupe managed to spank...

This Super Clean 1991 Acura NSX Is Going For $185,000
It makes me kind of sad that the new doesn’t seem to be super well-received by the Honda faithful, in large part because it’s so different by the beloved original. The new one is a high-tech spaceship, maybe the best handling car I have ever driven. But if the first...

Stop Overpaying for Lightly Used Cars
Stop Overpaying for Lightly Used Cars
I have a news flash for some of you: Dealers love the people that insist that used cars are always a better buy than new. That might be the case most of the time, but not always, and, in fact, some buyers looking for something that’s only a few years...

The Most Expensive Car Ever Sold at Auction Is This 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO For $48.4 Million
It’s been described as “the world’s most important, desirable, and legendary motor car.” Of course, that was by the people selling it, but the hyperbole must have worked somehow, because this became the most expensive car ever sold at auction this weekend at an RM Sotheby’s sale during Monterey Car...
