Tesla Is The New Standard In EV Charging
Tesla Is The New Standard In EV Charging-July 2024

, , , Volvo, and likely and are set to support Tesla’s charging plug, also known as the North American Charging Standard, in the coming years. Public charging station operators have responded in kind, as everyone from ChargePoint to EVgo to Blink and now, today, Volkswagen’s Electrify America have all signed on to add NACS in addition to CCS, the current standard for non-Tesla vehicles. It’s arguable that in just a few short weeks, Tesla’s has already become the de facto U.S. standard.

Electrify America confirmed the news today in a , quoted below:

Electrify America will continue to provide the Combined Charging System (CCS-1) connector throughout its network as it transitions to also support automakers adding NACS charging ports. The company will work to offer a NACS connector option at existing and future charging stations by 2025 to make charging as convenient as possible for EV owners.

“Since our founding, we have focused on building an inclusive and open hyper-fast charging network to facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles,” said Robert Barrosa, president and CEO of Electrify America. “We look forward to continuing to support industry-wide standards that increase vehicle interoperability and streamline public charging.”

This confirmation coincides with reporting that Volkswagen, the second-largest carmaker globally, is currently in talks with Tesla to implement NACS support in its cars. It’s unclear how Volkswagen’s changeover would go, but if it’s anything like its peers’, it’ll offer a CCS-to-NACS adapter in the near term ahead of a full switch to NACS built-in starting 2025.

Complaints around the reliability and user experience of most public charging platforms, save Tesla’s, are not uncommon, and Electrify America’s hardware has been a notable offender. The company’s chargers ranked second-to-last ahead of only EVgo in terms of DC fast charging satisfaction in a , and contributors to this site have as well. A couple of the brand’s terminals even , including one Chevy Bolt which was left totaled as a result.

The switch to Tesla’s plug won’t solve those issues for Electrify America of course, but Volkswagen’s overall vote of confidence is the last sign anyone needed that NACS has definitively won out.

Tesla Autopilot Glitch Makes For Something That Looks Like A Pretty Fun Video Game
I know Elon Musk Tesla is “very close to level five autonomy,” and that there are “no fundamental challenges,” just “many small problems,” but the truth is that those “many small problems” are what reality is made of, and there’s a great and actually fun example of one of these...

Here's The New 2022 BMW i4 EV And The Best Detail
The automotive world is in a mild tingly genitals state because BMW’s new all-electric car, the i4, was , e. Now, though, we know all the specs, and, even better, we got to see what I think is the car’s best detail, which I think is also a first...

It's Time To Get Used To Seeing The Toyota BZ4X Concept
We at the Shanghai Auto Show, the likely template for what will be a swift move into the all-electric cars for Toyota, who have so far been a bit slow to it. BZ4X’s full U.S. debut came Wednesday, when Toyota showed a car that looked more or less the...

7-Eleven Hopes Its 500 EV Chargers Will Convince You To Stop By, Maybe
Some folk have their gas station convenience store affiliations, and they run deep. You’ll rarely see my Shorti-hogging ass set foot in a QuickChek, for example. But I suppose if I drove an electric car and didn’t happen across one of the 50-odd Wawa locations with EV charging, I’d...

An Autonomous Truck Just Carted Watermelons 1,000 Miles And We Have Some Questions
One scenario where autonomous driving could ultimately prove useful is in the long-haul trucking industry, where drivers routinely do 10-hour stints with legally required breaks in between. An autonomous truck wouldn’t have to stop to rest. To put this into perspective, a startup named , which develops assisted driving...

David Beckham Just Became A Stakeholder In A Company That Converts Classics To EVs
David Beckham, probably one of the most famous (and richest) soccer players ever, has a well-known affinity for cars. While I wouldn’t call his collections over the years impressive, he has had a few cars that show he has taste, like an old Aston V8 Vantage and a Jaguar...
