Tesla Owner Accidentally Drives Off in Different Tesla Using the Tesla App
Tesla Owner Accidentally Drives Off in Different Tesla Using the Tesla App-August 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:58

A long row of unsold 2021 Model 3 sedans sits at a Tesla dealership in this photograph taken Sunday, May 2, 2021, in Littleton, Colo.

A man in was somehow able to get into someone else’s and drive off with it only by using the app in his own phone. Rajesh Randev told he thought he was getting into his own Tesla since the car he took was the same color as his.

When Randev was getting into what he thought was his car, there were two nearly identical s parked side by side, . He added that he was in a hurry to pick up his kids from school, so he inadvertently unlocked the wrong Tesla and drove off.

I get it, we’ve all been in a rush before and nearly walked up to the wrong car. However, I’d say it’s pretty rare that you can open a car that isn’t yours, and be able to drive away — at least in these modern times.

“Apparently I found some glitch,” .

He didn’t realize his colossal oopsie until he was driving. That’s when he noticed a crack on the car’s windshield — something his own didn’t have. Randev called his wife to ask if maybe she noticed a crack, but she didn’t… since it wasn’t their car. On top of that, Randev said he noticed the car’s charging cable wasn’t where he usually kept it.

It wasn’t long before the ’s rightful owner reached out.

“After five, 10 minutes I got a text on my phone that said ‘Rajesh are you driving [a] Tesla,’” he explained to the outlet. Randev went on to say the person who messaged him told him he was driving the wrong car. That’s when Randev parked the car and noticed it had different wheels from his own Model 3.

The two Tesla owners made a plan to switch the cars back — after Randev picked his kids from school. That’s right: Randev was able to get into the that wasn’t his, and drive away, for a second time.

When the two Tesla owners met up, the rightful owner of the car Randev was driving told him he’d found Randev’s phone number on a document inside Randev’s car. That means, if you’re following along, the other guy was able to gain access to Randev’s Tesla as well. Wild.

the Tesla app is intended to give access to the owner’s car as long as the phone and the vehicle have connectivity. From there, owners are able to lock and unlock the vehicle, manage the climate control and find charging stations. However, it’s intended to be used with the owner’s actual Tesla, not someone else’s with a similar paint job.

Randev said he attempted to reach out to Tesla with video evidence of the issue, but all he’s gotten from the automaker is radio silence.

Jalopnik would attempt to reach out to the ourselves, but when you call its , all you get is the .

Nancy Pelosi Buying Tesla Stock Options Isn't Illegal, But It's Not Great, Either
There’s a lot of f, and there’s a lot going on politically. Also, cars, specifically, electric cars. Lots going on everywhere, really, which is why I think it’s worth taking a moment to talk about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s purchase of a lot of “” of Tesla stock, and...

Blip: Technically It's Not A Car
Blip: Technically It's Not A Car
Aixam, who makes those don’t-really-need-a-license quadracycle things you find in Europe, actually makes some pretty decent-looking almost-cars. This isn’t a bad-looking little hatchback! I especially like the yin-yang door handle there. That’s a nice touch. Plus, the proportions with the big-ish looking wheels give it a kind of Labrador...

Which Cars Would Be Awesome With Harlequin Paint?
Volkswagen’s top color designer for those who love colorful cars: Our future may have more color to break up the endless sea of gray. That got the Jalopnik crew thinking about car colors. Naturally, we went to the extreme and started thinking about the bold paint scheme. Which cars...

Toyota Is Back On Top
Toyota Is Back On Top
Toyota is the world’s biggest automaker once again, Wall Street wasn’t jazzed about Tesla, and Faraday Future. All that and more in for January 28, 2021. Tesla Toyota outsold Volkswagen last year, giving it the sales crown for the first time in five years. (I accidentally wrote Tesla here...

Tesla's Refreshed Model S Promises Up To 520 Miles Of Range And A Really Bad Steering Wheel
On the eve of Tesla’s earnings call, it announced a newly refreshed Model S. As the car nears its tenth birthday, the one you can order now doesn’t look all that different from the one that launched in 2012. It’s the stuff inside and the stuff under the skin...

Amateur Investors Flood The Wrong AMC Subreddit In Search For 'Stonks'
I don’t really get how the stock market works. It all seems like a big scam to me. It seems an even bigger scam after what will surely be known as the infamous “Stonks” debacle of 2021, when redditors from the /r/WallStreetBets subreddit pushed the humble $20 stock price...
