Tesla Stock Might Be Too Strong-March 2024

The stock market is largely imaginary. A company’s valuation is loosely tied to its underlying finances, sure, but there are plenty of other factors that go into pricing out shares — from good old fashioned to the vague, unknowable metric of hype.

That latter factor, , is behind Tesla stock’s recent upward march. Its share price has more than doubled during 2023, a rise not matched by the company’s financial standing. Instead, analysts believe these gains come from enthusiasm around the automaker’s AI efforts — enthusiasm they don’t seem to put much financial stake in. Reuters of just how much faith analysts put in this rise:

Goldman Sachs on Monday cut Tesla to “hold” equivalent rating, joining Morgan Stanley and Barclays, which downgraded the stock last week. The brokerages, however, raised their price targets to reflect the momentum in Tesla shares, which have soared 71% since late April and more than doubled this year.

...

Morgan Stanley and Barclays pointed out that Tesla’s earnings were still at risk of negative revisions as it battles competition in China and may be forced to cut prices.

In April, Jefferies and Truist Securities downgraded Tesla after it reported lower margins in its first-quarter results.

Machine learning has had plenty of time in the spotlight this year, from art filters on TikTok to the growth of ChatGPT and generative AI. These analysts seem to think that Tesla’s cultural clout in this market, measured in upvotes and Twitter likes, won’t translate to any real financial boost for the company. They likely aren’t wrong — there’s a massive gap between tinkering with ChatGPT and implementing any kind of useful AI in a car.

For $9,500, enjoy that old car smell
Few cars survive their maker's demise, but the Studebaker Avanti seemed so advanced perhaps it managed to exist on borrowed time. Today's 4-door Avanti is uber rare, but is its price worth borrowing for? is here, and like a Mustang 5.0 in the snow, you can bet it's initially going...

For $13,500, Malibu Barbell
The Chumash native Americans originally named the area north of Los Angeles Humaliwo, or the surf sounds loudly. Cruising PCH in today's Chevy Malibu, you just might not hear the surf over its non-native LS1. Today, Malibu is an enclave of the well-to-do trust fund hippies, and celebrities, but that...

Fan-boys begged Ford for the international Focus since 2005, when the world got a new model and we got... a refresh. Now it's 2012 and it can finally be yours. But should you still want it? In a word; no. For years, America has watched Europeans get the good econoboxes...

The set to invade American shores after a several-decade hiatus isn't the same car that's caught on in Europe. It's better, with more engine, revised suspension and upgraded safety. The just got pwned. Disclaimer: Chrysler and Fiat wanted us to drive the 500 and two other models enough that they...

Is $9,800 for a JDM Pajero Pejorative? UPDATE: Now With More Poll!
In some Spanish speaking countries, the word pajero is slang for wanker. While we never officially got it in the U.S., today's Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution is here, and it may be fap-worthy. It seemed that a good 60% of you wouldn't have minding the pleasure of finding yourself behind the...
