That 'Certified Pre-Owned' Car Might Not Be What You Think
That 'Certified Pre-Owned' Car Might Not Be What You Think-February 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:49

Buying a used car is a great way to get more value for your dollar, and getting a car with a certified pre-owned warranty adds some extra protection. But some dealers aren’t always honest when making claims about their “certified” cars. Here are a couple of instances that should raise some flags.

The first thing to remember is that the When most folks talk about certified pre-owned often called CPO for short, they are referencing vehicles that, according to the manufacturer, meet a certain standard and qualify for an extension of the new car warranty.

Buying any car, new or used, is a risk. Machines are not perfect, things break/malfunction and…

I got a recent email from a reader who was helping his son shop for a pre-owned Volkswagen. The buyer wanted a certified car but found what he thought was a good example at a Chevrolet dealer.

“My son is looking at a 2015 VW TDI Sportwagen manual trans, low miles. He was told by Chevy dealer, that if he wants it to be CPO with a two year warranty the price would increase $500 – 600. I just don’t know if that’s true or just a dealer ploy to get a little more out of the sale.”

This is suspicious on two levels. First, a car can only be “manufacturer certified” if it is sold by a dealership within that brand. In this case, only a Volkswagen dealer is authorized to certify and sell a “certified pre-owned” car that has a factory-backed warranty extension. What the dealer may be doing, in this case, is attempting to sell an aftermarket warranty that would act like a VW CPO plan – which brings me to the second red flag of this conversation, the cost. Only $500 to $600 seems suspiciously cheap for a warranty extension.

So either the dealer is offering them the warranty deal of the century, or attempting to charge the buyer an extra few hundred bucks without having anything to show for it. The buyer should request the details of the “warranty” and the coverage that it includes before signing anything.

Sometimes dealers are selling legitimate manufacturer certified pre-owned cars, but aren’t exactly forthcoming as to how those cars qualified for such coverage.

I had a client in the Chicago area shopping for a CPO Infiniti Q40 sedan. His original choice was sold before he arrived, but the dealer had a few other options at similar price points. He noticed that one of the cars did have an accident posted on the CarFax, thought the report did indicate the damage was minor.

Even still, he wanted to know more about the car.

He requested the inspection report from the dealership, to which their response was, “oh, we don’t show people that.” That was enough to kill the deal right there, and have him go elsewhere. The other Infiniti dealer across town had a similar vehicle, and was more than willing to show the condition of the car and what work was done to it.

While most certified pre-owned cars are in good condition, shady dealerships have been known to cut corners and slap that “CPO” stamp on a vehicle that may not have qualified under the manufacturer standards.

If a buyer has some doubts about the condition of a used car, even if it comes with a CPO warranty, it’s always wise to get that car inspected by an independent shop.

2022 BMW X3 M Competition: What Do You Want to Know?
is about as fat as its ever been. Right now, the company makes three M sedans, two M coupes, two M convertibles and four M crossovers. There are, of course, different variants within those models, but we don’t need to get into that, because it’s all a bit confusing....

A Smaller Version of the Cadillac Lyriq Will Be Built In Mexico
The Cadillac Lyriq is , putting premium materials together into a comfortable, competent highway cruiser. But the Lyriq starts at over sixty grand, and only climbs from there — far from an entry-level price. For a brand that it will need, and quickly, entry-level models. , which will likely...

Even Maserati Is Doing a 10-Year Drivetrain Warranty Now
We all know the age-old stereotype that keeps many of us from touching any Italian car with a 10-foot pole: they’re unreliable. It doesn’t help that the performance of many of these cars is impressive and can be had for cheap used. Mostly because buyers are wary to buy...

Tesla Wants You To Sit in a Wet Dumpster While Your Car Charges
I get it. It’s summer, and it’s far too hot out. The last thing you want is to sit in your hot Tesla while it charges, but you don’t want to use up too much of that incoming power on climate control. If only your local Supercharger had some...

At $8,000, Could This 1988 Yugo GVL Have You Laughing All the Way to the Bank?
The asking price on today’s Yugo is almost exactly twice the original MSRP from the model’s introduction in 1985. Let’s see if that price has you doubled over with laughter. I think the best word to describe yesterday’s heavily-modded is polarizing. Well, polarizing with muffled screams of horror over...

Genesis Debuts Pricing for Its Gorgeous 2023 G90 Flagship
Alright, so here’s the thing: Genesis is pretty much the most interesting car company operating right now. It’s one of the few companies that’s going its own way with exterior and interior styling, and it’s the first company since Lexus in the early 1990s to offer a meaningful challenge...
