The 2024 Ford Mustang Brings Back the Drift Stick-June 2024

Back in 2018, Ford introduced a magic lever that turned you into Ken Block. It was called the , and it was essentially an . But the , and the Drift Stick is now merely a faint, warm memory in the heads of snow-drifting enthusiasts. At least, it was — until Ford brought it back for the 2024 Mustang.

The Drift Stick, that baton of electrical sorcery, was a complicated piece. It had to play with the Focus’s ECU, tricking its ABS system into sending thousands of pounds of hydraulic pressure to the rear calipers without letting up when the wheels locked and the tires slid. It also had to disconnect the RS’s center differential, allowing the rear end to freewheel to prevent a stall. But the Mustang is — its Drift Brake can be a little simpler.

Maybe it’s because I’m not wearing my glasses, but the front end is growing on me a bit

The Mustang, , splits its parking brake off to a second, electronically controlled rear brake caliper. But it seems Ford’s performance engineers took a look at that split rear setup and went, “Hang on. Formula Drift cars have dual rear calipers. We can do something here.”

That “something” was to bring . on board, to help develop a drift brake that Ford claims is a “competition-ready system.” That’s a lot to live up to, especially when the dual rear calipers on FD cars are , but maybe the Blue Oval meant competitions at your local grassroots event.

Flick the car into Track Mode, and that brake handle becomes an unlatched lever tied straight to the secondary rear pistons — one that won’t lock itself in the engaged position mid-slide. You’ll likely still need to hold in the clutch, but the electronic setup means you won’t have to go out and buy a drift button.

Ford’s been invested deep into drifting for years now, but it’s interesting to see that tech finally start to hit the Mustang. Just, be warned — the Drift Brake isn’t meant for street use. Find an empty parking lot before you go full Ken Block.

At $6,000, Could This Shabby Chic 1991 Lotus Elan Get Some of Your British Racing Green?
While it may share its name with a venerated and desirable ancestor, today’s Elan shares little else. Let’s see if this bedraggled edition is priced commensurate with its station and condition. While it didn’t fair as badly as did Monday’s Taurus SHO, yesterday’s still couldn’t get a pass at its...

What is the Best-Looking Car You Can Buy for $50,000?
Let’s be real, friends—car purchases aren’t always rational. You can say you want about safety features and good fuel economy, but cars can be just as much of a fashion statement as a nice watch or a pair of jeans. So if you wanted exotic car looks but don’t have...

God Can Always Track You Down and Kill You, but in a 300 Horsepower Toyota Camry You Get a Pretty Good Running Start
I spent a week in a nearly $40,000 with a red leather interior and 301 horsepower. It is one of the best cars on sale today. I’d call it an instant classic but for two minor flaws. ( Toyota wanted me to drive the new Camry so bad that they...

What an Electric London Taxi Is Like to Drive
Providing passage for the tired, tipsy, and busy, the Black Cab is as much a part of foggy London’s furniture as the red phone boxes no one uses. Thing is, the cabs you’re used to seeing aren’t very efficient, comfortable, or spacious. So the LEVC (London Electric Vehicle Company) TX...

At $16,995, Could This 1976 Chevy Silverado 4X4 Shortbed Be a Truck You Might Long For?
Today’s C/K might be old, but its kit and condition mean it’s still got it going on. Let’s see if its price will also make it worth going out and getting. Ford’s Taurus has been described as the car that saved Ford. Hell, there’s even by that title. That may...

2019 Toyota Supra: The King Is Back And Good Enough To Hunt Porsches
It’s been a long time coming. It has been 25 years since the launch of the last , way back in 1993. The internet was barely out of diapers back then, and all you really needed in life was a manual gearbox, a turbocharged 2JZ engine, a gigantic hoop spoiler...
