The Average Used Car Now Costs $27,500
The Average Used Car Now Costs $27,500-April 2024

You balk at that $27,981 on a 2008 now, but that’s the real deal for most used car prices.

New data from Black Book, a Hearst company, shows the . As reported by another Hearst company, , this price represents the average list price among 95 percent of available used vehicles listed for sale at both franchise and independent dealerships. The compiled data shows used car prices averaged $27K last month, and now stand at $27.5K for December.

also shows a similar trend. The car value site adds 2021’s used car inventory is 15 percent lower than it was this time last year, while used prices are near 27 percent higher.

From KBB:

The average used car list price in America at the end of November was $27,569. That’s 27% higher than in November of 2020. It’s a jaw-dropping 41% higher than in November of 2019, the last month before a COVID-19 was first detected and knocked the world’s economy off its tracks.

Black Book says the “retail listing price index now sits at around 35 percent above” where we were last year, with prices steadily increasing weekly due to again, a lack of new and used inventory.

But wait, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Sorta. While Black Book was analyzing prices of nearly two million vehicles on U.S. dealer lots, those used vehicles with the $27.5k average price tag, were newer used vehicles. Data shows inventory is growing for used vehicles up to two years old, while inventory for used vehicles between two and eight years old is dropping off. So at least if you’re paying more for these used vehicles, you’re likely getting a much-newer than usual car.

It has been a hot mess of a year for new and used car prices. We’ve been following this particular mess extensively in 2021 as prices just…keep…rising. In August, our Elizabeth Blackstock took a look at the used car market finally cooling off after a . Prices had soared over 30 percent in just three months – the largest three-month jump since 1974 (which was just 12 percent).

In October, Tom McParland gave us a look at what Just this month, Erik Shilling told us how. And Tom shared some.

For $1,300, Looks Aren’t Everything
It goes without saying that in general Toyota’s Camry is the automotive equivalent of warm milk laced with Ambien. Contrastingly, today’s All-Trac is ugly enough to keep you up at night, but is its price worth losing sleep over? Trying to sell a heavily customized car or truck is akin...

For $6,900, What’s A Ute?
Ned Flanders drove a Metro, and when implored by his wife Maude to go faster so as to escape a clingy Homer Simpson, he screamed I can’t, it’s a Gee-ohhh! Today’s Nice Price or Crack Pipe custom pickup may be similarly lethargic and Geo-riffic, but will you find its price...

2014 Lexus IS: The Jalopnik Review
The entry level luxury sport sedan game is mad fierce, y’all. In that segment the Lexus IS has always been the kind of car that finishes solidly in the middle of the pack. With a (mostly) new IS for 2014, Lexus aims to change that. (: Lexus needed me to...

For $12,000, What The El?
Called “El Cedes”, by its seller, today’s custom El Camino carries so much audacity that you may wonder if it has room for anything else. Of course it’s up to you to determine if its price is also weighing it down. When given the choice at a fine dining establishment,...

1967 BMW 1602: The Jalopnik Classic Review
If you ever come across the opportunity to drive one of BMW's Neue Klasse (New Class) cars, you need to seize it. Even 50 years after they first debuted they're just as good as you've heard, if not better. I've always had a love for these cars. I love their...

Forum Trashes BMW Owner Who Had M3 Delivered In Wrong Shade Of Blue
If you are dealing with a high-priced luxury or sports car, it is almost 100% impossible to complain about that vehicle on the Internet without someone alleging that you sound like a whiny prick. One M3 buyer who says he got screwed over by BMW is learning that lesson right...
