As you know, it’s a hard time to be a car buyer. New vehicles are hard to find and those you can find are in , overpriced, or both. This has made used cars hard to come by and inflated their prices. Not just for basic used cars either, reports that even buyers of high-end cars like Rolls Royces and Bentley are turning to the used market.

With order books full for the next few months, Rolls Royce buyers are having to turn to something I didn’t know existed: the company’s certified pre-owned program called . Don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of it either. The company usually sells only a handful of CPO Rollers. Now sales are up. From Bloomberg:

More than ever, members of the Rolls-Royce elite are choosing to purchase vehicles from the company’s “Provenance”—or highly selective pre-owned—program. “It used to be that one out of three vehicles we sold were Provenance,” said Gerry Spahn, head of communications for Rolls-Royce North America, during a luncheon held for reporters in order to showcase the new cars. “Now, it’s closer to 75%.”

This isn’t some run-of-the-mill CPO plan either, it includes things like a comprehensive multi-point inspection process, personalization options, and a two-year service package.

Rolls-Royce isn’t alone, the whole high-end luxury used market is seeing gains:

At Bentley, sales rose 150% from January to May. Certified-pre-owned sales at McLaren are up only 2% year to date over 2020, a record-year, but the prices those supercars are selling for used are higher than when they were new. “McLaren 765LT coupes are trading on the pre-owned market up to 40% over MSRP, which is staggering,” says Nic Brown, acting president of McLaren North America.

Some rich people like to save money, but a lot of them are impatient. Buying that two-year-old Phantom gets them their vehicle immediately. Rolls Royce’s head of communication acknowledged this to Bloomberg, saying that buying used makes sense for many customers because of “a stronger sense of, ‘I want this now.’”

Could $6,999 For This Amazingly Clean 1988 Ford Tempo AWD Be Music To Your Ears?
It is unlikely you will find a cleaner example of Ford’s ‘80s AWD sedan than today’s Tempo at any price. The question is, should you go looking at all? So I’ve decided that I desperately want one of those life-like infant dolls like the one in the new Apple...

The 2020 Audi A6 Allroad Wags On In America For $66,895
We’ve been really loud advocates of Audi keeping wagons in America, but now it’s time for everyone to swallow the pill that hurts going down, which is how much these things actually cost. The will start at $66,895. The Allroad is back, for now, featuring air suspension just like...

A Reminder To Always Read The Fine Print When You Are Shopping For A Car
December is usually a good time to get a deal on a car since both manufacturers and dealers want to end the year with strong sales numbers. However, just because something looks like a good deal doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pick apart the details. A reader was shopping for...

At $6,950, Is This Burgundy 1990 Chevrolet Corvette Worth Breaking Out Some Green?
The ad for today’s Corvette says it’s been garage-kept all its life. That’s almost a shame since a car this clean needs to be seen. Let’s see if its price means it’ll find a new garage to call home. If you pull something out of the back of the...

Why The 2019 Subaru Forester May Be The Perfect Family Car
The redesigned-for- doesn’t top the charts at any one thing. But it does do a lot of things reasonably well, including serving as a capable, reasonably-priced family hauler. ( Subaru let me borrow a Subaru Forester Sport for a week, and dropped it off at my house with a...
