The Chevrolet Bolt Has a New Fire-Related Recall, But It's Not What You Think-July 2024

Recalls and the know each other well. So when a new Bolt recall is announced — like the one on Tuesday covering 140,000 vehicles — it kind of makes you stand up and take notice. General Motors asked every single Bolt owner worldwide to bring their EVs in for battery replacement in 2021; after a campaign of that magnitude, one that , you kind of wonder what else could possibly go wrong with the car.

GM said in a statement Tuesday that in rare cases, exhaust gases from the front seat belt pretensioners can come in contact with carpet fibers after a crash, potentially causing a fire. The company found three reports of fires that could have been caused by the problem. The severity of those was unknown.

To fix it, GM will install metal foil along the edge of the carpet nearest to the pretensioner exhaust. Certain models will have pretensioner covers installed, the article adds. You’ve got to wonder how the “fixed” carpets will look; personally I think all affected Bolts should receive fresh, new fire-retardant carpets. Metal foil in the interior sound like it’ll look terrible, and already?

At least this recall doesn’t affect every Bolt on the road. The EUV model is spared, as are the Bolts in Cruise’s fleet. (Good for Cruise; .) Some hatchbacks across all model years — from 2017 to 2023 — are subject to the campaign. You can check the status of your Bolt by inputting its VIN into the .

This isn’t the first time seat belt pretensioners, which lock the belts in preparation for a crash, have come under the transportation department’s scrutiny. Earlier this year, for pretensioners exploding in much the same way have been known to, sending shrapnel into the cabin.

The artist formerly and currently known as Prince may have wanted to party like it's 1999 but today's phone booth Ford will let you Festiva like its 1991. Turbo'd and flared, do you think this lime-colored custom is worth its asking price in green? Voting Crack Pipe on yesterday's means...

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible: The Jalopnik Review
The is one of the most surprising cars I have driven. Given its hefty waistline and reputation as a monster muscle car, the handling performance is quite astonishing. So, providing you don't wear a toupee, the convertible ZL1 should be just as impressive. As with most convertibles, the car is...

2013 Audi RS5: The Jalopnik Review
Europeans have been graced with this sporty machine's presence for some time, but now it crosses the pond. Audi fans can rejoice as the hits US soil. It's our turn to give it a good, old fashioned thrashing, to see how it holds up. And what we find is a...

For $3,500, Impala To The People
Like any good scientist, Goldilocks famously sampled all three options before settling consistently for the middle of the road choice. With its 327 and pillarless four door body today's Impala also stakes out the middle ground, but is its price fair to middling? So there's this crap movie that came...

The Mustang is a horse of the American Southwest, where also there exist Rancheros who might ride said Mustangs. Today's contender is a Mustchero, and as American as apple pie, but does its price make it a must-have-o? Do you remember the Six Million Dollar Man? In that show, a...

For $4,000, Don’t Get Bogged Down.
Did you know that 25 U.S. states allow cousins to legally marry? Legend says that's wrong because the combined gene pool would be wading-depth only and might result in such inbred offspring as today's Jimmy-maro. That bog monster may be all in the family, but is its price relatively normal?...
