The Chevy Bolt Recall Is A Weird One-May 2024

Chevy is recalling over 68,000 Bolts from model years 2017-2019 because of the risk of fire, with 50,925 of those in the U.S., after cases of parked Bolts catching fire. Chevy has offered Bolt owners a slightly complicated band-aid of a solution until Chevy can offer a more permanent one.

There were smoke inhalation injuries in two of the fires but none in the others, five of which have been identified by GM so far, . GM thinks they are linked to batteries it sourced from LG Chem and made in South Korea. In all five fires, GM said that the batteries were at capacity, and so it’s recommending to owners with 2017, 2018, or 2019 Bolts to take steps to limit the capacity of the batteries to 90 percent.

GM also devoted to the issue, while NHTSA

Jesse Ortega, GM’s chief engineer on the Bolt said in a video that if you have a 2017 or 2018 Bolt you should use the Hilltop Reserve mode until there’s a fix. For those with 2019 Bolts, Ortega says to change the target charge setting to 90 percent. If you can’t make these changes, or don’t feel comfortable making them, Ortega says that you should park your Bolt outside your garage and not under a carport because of the fire risk.

Ortega shows you how to make the changes at about the 2:30 mark in the following video:

GM says it’ll give its dealers a software update on Monday which, when installed, will automatically limit Bolts from charging more than 90 percent, and that affected Bolt owners should make appointments with their dealers to have the update installed.

Another software update will be available sometime early next year, Ortega says, and GM is working “around the clock” to figure out what is going on and issue a permanent fix. That fix, which would eliminate the reduction to 90% battery capacity, won’t be until at least January 1, 2021.

This is all of a piece of how I imagine recalls will increasingly look like as EVs grow in use: Fixes via software update.

Jaguar's All-Electric Plan Is A Big Push Upmarket
Jaguar’s coming electrics are going to cost a lot of money, the used car market might finally (really) have peaked, and GM. All that and more in for June 24, 2021. Jaguar currently competes in the crowded luxury tier that is Merc, BMW, Audi, Acura, Volvo, Genesis, Lexus. Because...

I'm Hearing Reports That F9 Might Actually Be Good
It used to be very important to have a movie critic, or a set of movie critics, that you trusted. Because, at heart, movie reviews are service journalism, in that I need to know if paying $15 and spending two hours in a theater is a good use of...

Hot Wheels Unleashed Is Way Prettier Than A Toy Car Game Has Any Right To Be
Like any budding gearhead, I had bunch of Hot Wheels growing up. Too many, in fact. Small Sterilite containers full of the things. I was proud of my collection, but in retrospect, I cost my parents a small fortune in diecasts. Back in my day, you couldn’t just like...

This Is The 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback And Yes It Comes With A Stick Shift
The 2022 Honda Civic sedan looks like a solid improvement over its predecessor, except there’s one problem: The manual transmission is gone, leaving only a continuously variable transmission. But fear not, 11th-gen Civic shoppers, there is a hatchback, and that one gets the stick. Here’s a first look. A...

The Cops Followed A Man Home And Arrested Him In His Garage. The Supreme Court Said It Was Unconstitutional
Some police must think that the rule of law doesn’t apply to them because of their position. As the , that’s what happened with one man in Northern California who had an officer enter his garage and arrest him for drunk driving. In late 2016, Arthur Lange was on...

Batman Movies Always Cast The Perfect Car For Bruce Wayne
Car casting in movies is very hit or miss, if you’ll please excuse the pun. Sometimes the choice of car is perfect for the role, like the E34 in Ronin, and sometimes even James Bond struggles to find the right car, like his 1987 Lincoln Mark VII LSC in...
