The Ford M-Sport Rally Team Is Off To A Rough Start At Monte Carlo
The Ford M-Sport Rally Team Is Off To A Rough Start At Monte Carlo-December 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:12:29

The rally hits keep coming, and they don’t stop . is done, but the 2021 Monte Carlo Rally is underway and already proving a difficult event for some.

Watch as driver Teemu Suninen, bows out after his Ford Fiesta suffers a gnarly tuck and roll at the stage:

Until the big hit, Suninen was making very good time. The M-Sport team expected to finish the stage in excellent standing and move onto the next with some momentum, .

But the crash bent the ’s rollcage and this particular car and driver will be out of commission at Monte Carlo. Suninen emerged safely after the roll. We can see the driver donning a jacket on the bank and he looks fine, if a little annoyed.

Who wouldn’t be after a hit like that?

Still, the driver is unharmed and serves as a testament to the of these rally cars. While the initial bonk on the bank doesn’t look too harsh, that roll and pitch downward looked quite dangerous. A bent cage is just proof that these machines really are outfitted to take some of the hardest hits in motorsport.

The crash is nonetheless a disappointment for the team, and M-Sport’s manager said the following in response to the accident:

“I feel most sorry for the team to be honest, we worked so hard for the last four weeks to come here. We spent four days testing and that’s how we’re rewarded… It’s pretty disappointing really. Great to set that kind of time but the intention was to get two cars to the finish and we’ve not even managed that on one stage. After everything we’ve done to get here, that’s a pretty big kick in the teeth really.”

The M-Sport team has faced setbacks elsewhere, too, as driver Gus Greensmith has had a bad showing at Monte Carlo so far. He finished 11th overall after five stages, . And it can’t be easy knowing that all the pressure of the event rests on your sole surviving car. It won’t be a pleasant climb back up for the UK team.

But there’s a lot more rally action to come as the 2021 Monte Carlo Rally is off to an eventful start. You can follow along on WRC’s or on the WRC app. The app’s upgraded version, WRC+, is one of the few apps that Jalops on staff say is worth a sub.

What's Your Go-To Snack For a Long Road Trip?
I do a lot of driving. Enough driving that I think I’ve got a pretty good handle on eating on the road. The sad fast food offerings at every highway exit are enticing when you’re craving empty calories, but while it’s a lot of energy for not a lot...

Where Are All the Beeps?
Where Are All the Beeps?
What is the noise that emerges from the car? This is the beeping, the toot of the other wheel that doesn’t touch the ground through tires. The honks. The toots. The hornenations. Big beeps, bouncing up to your eardrums. You see, from afar, the hand as it touches the...

Who Is This For?
I can’t tell you where I was when word first came out that managed to produce a book about itself that costs more than $250,000, perhaps because my eyes were so far rolled back into my head that I couldn’t see my surroundings. But I can tell you that...

The 2020 Cadillac CT4-V and CT5-V Arrive Without The Big Power We're Used To
Cadillac’s V-series is getting two new members in the small CT4-V to replace the ATS-V and the medium -V to replace the . Both receive smaller turbocharged engines and less power than the cars they ostensibly replace, but that’s for good reason. For one thing, Cadillac seems to hint...

The 2020 Lexus RX Finally Gets Android Auto and Not a Whole Lot Else
Updates to the 2020 and aren’t huge, but they matter to the people actually buying the cars. There’s more tech now, it should drive slightly better and it looks marginally different. The RX is already incredibly popular, so why fix something that isn’t broken, right? The biggest update is...

Brooks & Dunn—'Red Dirt Road'
Traffic sucks, so why not start your morning off with some music? You provide the toast and we’ll provide the jams. In 1998, my family moved from Augsburg, Germany to Lawton, Oklahoma, and it was there that I fell in love with country music. My dad used to blast Brooks...
