There’s no shortage of electric vehicle concepts coming out of automakers’ design houses right now. , , and even . But these concepts are often same-y blobs of wind-tunnel-tested efficiency, with little thought or care put into the design other than a corporate face and a vague gesture towards “sleekness.” Genesis, with its X Speedium Coupe, appears to have gone another route.

The idea for the X Speedium Coupe came about at a track day, leading Genesis’ design team to the concept of a low-slung sports car. That led to the , but the design team didn’t stop iterating with that initial reveal. They kept tweaking, fine-tuning, and pondering the greatest automotive question of all: How long can headlights get?

Pretty long, it seems

The result was the X Speedium Coupe, named for South Korea’s . It maintains the grand touring proportions of the original X Concept, with Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke giving particular attention to the and , The result speaks for itself — this design is fantastic.

Genesis has always appeared to be a design-forward brand, and the Speedium X concept is the next step in that design language. The headlights now wrap around the front end, forming the same V-shape as the grille used on the company’s ICE cars. Donckerwolke hinted that this may make its way to future electrified Genesis models, as electrification lessens the need for ostentatious front-end openings.

The looks hold up in person, despite my little camera’s relentless battle with the studio lighting

The ducktail spoiler at the rear, inspired by the Shelby Daytona Coupe of all things, may be a bit harder to transfer to models like the upcoming electric GV60 or electrified variant of the GV70. If the rest of this design language can fit a larger shell, however, the next generation of Genesis ought to be a treat to see.

Citroën's 2CV is so basic and elemental, it's hard to imagine it could be deconstructed any further. Today's Mehari does just that, being little more than a plastic dog dish on wheels, but will its price bowl you over? Not plastic, but instead all kinds of heavy metal was yesterday's...

The Mercury Grand Marquis may have put the aunt in the Panther platform, but today's three pedal special may just erase that octogenarian image. But, will its price make it old news? Turning Japanese by the eighties band, the Vapors, may seem a xenophobic screed, but really it's just about...

As illustrated in The Prince and the Pauper there's a yawning chasm of difference between royalty and commoner. Today's 350-powered Bertone Volvo 262C attempts to bridge that gap, but does its price make it a royal pain? The French, when faced with new dietary guidelines from their royalty, knew just...

They say the best defense is a good offense. Today's Land Rover Defender 90 looks pretty good, but is its price offensive? Born in 1948, the Land Rover is, next to the Jeep, the oldest 4x4 brand offered to consumers. Despite being of an age when it might seem appropriate...

People like to accessorize themselves, a habit that goes all the way back to humanity's formative days. Today's Volvo S40 is decked out like it's a Suicide Girls pin-up, but is its price one adornment that's too much? Wow, two Volvos in a row, that must be some kind of...
