The Mitsubishi Mirage Will Die First in Japan
The Mitsubishi Mirage Will Die First in Japan-February 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:19

The has lived out its existence toiling at a thankless deed, as the cheapest — or — new cars available to buy in the U.S. over the past decade. The Japanese automaker has never moved a ton of the things, selling units in 2021, but the Mirage has helped Mitsubishi squeak by during times when it had no vaguely redeeming product to speak of. Those times are beginning to change, because the new is good enough. And so, the Mirage’s long trudge, longer than anyone would’ve ever expected, is coming to an end. At least, in its home market.

Indeed, if you visit , you’ll see a message that reads, translated, “Since Mirage is discontinued, body colors, options, etc. may not meet your request. Please contact our sales staff for details.” The outgoing sixth-generation Mirage first entered production globally in 2012, so this marks the end of a nearly 11-year run for the jelly bean on wheels in the country. And given that Japan’s where the Mirage is disappearing first, it’s not a stretch to assume the subcompact’s days may be numbered elsewhere.

Mitsubishi Motors North America isn’t saying as much yet, telling that “the Mirage remains an integral part of our U.S. line-up at this time.” That’s how this tends to go — we can all see the writing on the wall, but the car ain’t technically dead until it is. For 2023, the Mirage has already lost its only calling card for slow-car-fast enjoyers: .

And predictable though the Mirage’s end may be, what with Americans’ ever-deepening abhorrence of small cars and ever-tightening emissions regulations , it’s nevertheless worthy of mourning. Cars like the Mirage are . They’re not good, but . Almost every automaker that’s contributed anything to the cause of cheap, simple transportation in the U.S. has since given up; if Mitsubishi goes, only Nissan and Kia will remain.

That’s sad, but at the same time, this seems like something that had to happen for Mitsubishi eventually. With the Outlander, the brand has finally got that mass-market winner it’s needed for so long, that might just spur Mitsubishi into its next era — whatever that looks like. Maybe the company can begin to dream again, ideally in Ralliart colors. Foreign markets will get a Mirage successor in the form of a , but it’s inadvisable to hold your breath for that one appearing on your local lot.

At $25,000, Could This 2006 Audi A8 W12 Executive Be Your Stealthy Super Saloon?
Elmer Fudd’s always pronounced his ‘Rs’ as ‘Ws,’ and would no doubt love today’s Audi. It rocks both luxury accoutrements and a “W”12 engine. That is of course, unless its price proves to be cartoonishly too high. Have you ever thought about how many great cars there are that have...

Those Memorial Day Weekend Car Sales Might Not Be As Good As You Think
Due to relentless marketing, a lot of people seem to think that Memorial Day is this massive clearance event for new cars where you can score the deal of a lifetime. But depending on the brand you choose, you may actually be getting a worse deal than you would have...

All 19 Of The Subaru Ascent's Cupholders, Ranked
The is a car made for the great excesses of America, including our insatiable need for large road beverages. It touts an astonishing 19 cup and bottle holders, some of which are vastly better than the others. I bought a completely ridiculous Double Gulp from 7-11 to find out which...

At CAN$15,000, Would You Willingly Be The Frog To This 1976 Lancia Scorpion?
Called the Monte Carlo elsewhere, today’s e Lancia Beta went by Scorpion in both the U.S. and this particular car’s home, Canada. Let’s see if its price brings a stinging rebuke, eh? It’s about 4,500 miles from Alaska to Boston, Mass., a distance apparently covered in some fashion by last...

At $2,950, This 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser Could Have You Cruising The Land In No Time
“Rode hard and put away wet” seems to be an apt description of today’s FJ80. You’ll have to have to decide if its price makes the somewhat rough appearance excusable. You know, if instead of all-things-auto, this confluence of crazies focused exclusively on the products of Japan’s second largest automaker...

Here's A Close Comparison Between The 2018 Mazda 6 And The 2017 Mazda 6
The is a competent and comfortable cruising machine, but the refrain every critic seems to be singing about loudest its praise for its design. It’s a great looking car, and taking a closer look here really let you see what a fresh set of lights and bumpers can do for...
