The Toyota FT-Se Is Toyota's Electric Sports Car Future-March 2024

Toyota teased last week, a sleek electric coupe that uses for high-density energy storage. Now, we’ve finally seen the car in full, but it comes with a strange caveat: Despite the near-production looks, it may take some time for this new FT-Se to actually hit dealer floors.

The FT-Se (presumably meaning Sports Electric) debuted at the Japan Mobility Show today, as an expression of Toyota’s “Find Your Future” mantra. The approach stands for a commitment to variety in EVs, such that any prospective buyer can find their future dream car among Toyota’s electric offerings.

But, buried within Toyota’s reveal presentation, CEO Koji Sato let slip a very interesting piece of information about the FT-Se’s future availability: The platform that underpins it will be given to Lexus first, before being allowed to trickle down to Toyota. From :

In these cars, the scenery looks completely different.

The Lexus brand will first produce cars that tell this story.

...

Of course, Toyota and GR-brand cars, like with these two models here, will also change.

If we have the technology to make cars smaller, lower, and lighter, from sports cars and SUVs to pickup trucks and small vans, we can create a diverse lineup with outstanding qualities.

The FT-Se looks absolutely fantastic, and may well finally deliver on the longstanding promise of low-slung EV platforms making incredible sports cars. But, while it’ll likely still beat the to market, you’re not likely to see a shiny new coupe on your local Toyota lot come Christmastime. Sounds like we’ll all get at least one Lexus December to Remember first.

This Volkswagen VR6-Powered Smyth Performance GF3 Is An Almost-Finished Sleeper
I know a common saying in the car community is “you should never take on someone else’s project.” But what if that someone’s project is a midengine roadster kit car powered by a Volkswagen Jetta VR6 paired with a manual shift and a limited-slip differential? Because that’s what I...

At $15,000, Could This Roush-Supercharged 2008 Ford F-150 Roust Some Interest?
Ford’s F-Series may be the country’s best seller, but in stock form it’s not the hottest performer. Today’s F-150 seeks to address that inequity with a Roush Stage 2 supercharger on its 5.4-liter V8. Let’s see if you can get pumped up over its price. If it hadn’t been...

Meet The Bonkers Home-Built Wedge And The Man That Drove It 5,000 Miles In A Road Rally
I think most of us oil-soaked gearheads can appreciate the charm and novelty of a really bonkers one-off car. Even if the design is confusing or downright ill-conceived, you have to respect the effort and force of will it takes to build a whole idiosyncratic car from, essentially, scratch,...

At $11,500, Is This 1982 Toyota Celica Supra Anything To Celebrate?
With the Celica long dead and the Supra now more closely aligned with a BMW than any Toyota model, it’s easy to forget that today’s Celica Supra existed at all. Let’s find out if it’s priced to prod memories a while longer. There were two camps on yesterday’s ....

At $12,900, Is This 2003 BMW M3 Drop-Top A Drop-Dead Good Deal?
Today’s M3 is a convertible that’s also been converted to a six-speed manual. Might that make it worth converting some cash to buy it? Different people like different kinds of dogs. That’s why they make them in so many different models. Some folks like big dogs. Others like little...
