These Are The Late-Model Cars With The Highest Depreciation-May 2024

Cars are typically depreciating assets (unless you’re buying a ) but this is actually good news if you’re a used car shopper. Here are the late-model cars with the highest three-year depreciation and the top one is kind of surprising.

The site notes that despite the average car depreciating at 35 percent after the first three years of purchase, luxury and imported cars will lose between 46 to 52 percent of their value in the same amount of time. If you’re looking for a bargain, this is where you’d look for a three-year old car.

It’s not particularly surprising that, in general, luxury and imported cars make up the majority of this list from . What’s interesting is the number one vehicle.

The majority of this list comprised of luxury cars because people tend to lease them more often, which means that there are more of them in the market that are coming off lease. iSeeCars notes:

“Luxury brands are known for depreciating at a higher rate because they are often leased to keep monthly payments down, which lowers the demand for these vehicles in the used car market,” said iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly. “While some luxury models tend to quickly lose a lot of their value, they still don’t drop in price enough to attract used car buyers who may be reluctant to pay the premium for high-end trims and technological features.”

Sitting high and pretty at the top of the the list is a BMW 5 Series, but what’s maybe even more unexpected is the Volkswagen Passat, which, as our own car-buying expert Tom McParland pointed out, is a mainstream car being hit by luxury car depreciation.

So, I guess if you’re looking for a standard car that’s suddenly pretty affordable and probably still has some warranty left on it, start looking at Passats that are two or three years old.

At $3,975, Could This 2011 Ford Crown Vic Interceptor Be Your Blue Light Special?
The seller of today’s cop car Crown Vic claims you won’t find more car for the money. That’s probably true seeing as they don’t build ‘em this big anymore, but we’ll still have to weigh the size/price balance. To all the Saab loving Jalops that weighed in, yesterday’s was a...

At $3,900, Could This 1999 Olds Aurora Be An Awe Inspiring Sight?
A famous Simpson’s episode had Principal Skinner passing off a kitchen fire as the Aurora Borealis, to humorous effect. No such chicanery is necessary with today’s Olds Aurora, though its price might still prove delightfully devilish. Do kids actually play ‘Cops and Robbers?’ Did kids ever do so? I know...

Can I Sue A Dealer If They Lied About My Trade?
Everyone knows you But what if you think the dealer straight up lied about the value of your car only, to profit from it later? Unfortunately, your options for recourse are limited. Recently I got a note from a reader who was pretty ticked off when the dealer told her...
