On April 25, 1990, NASA placed the Hubble Space Telescope into low orbit around Earth. It wasn’t the first telescope placed into orbit, but it’s been one of the longest-lasting and most versatile, providing gorgeous images of space that have furthered our understanding of astronomy and introduced future generations to the magic of the universe.

(Welcome to Today in History, the series where we dive into important historical events that have had a significant impact on the automotive or racing world. If you have something you’d like to see that falls on an upcoming weekend, let me know at eblackstock [at] jalopnik [dot] com.)

The technology used in the telescope isn’t anything terribly groundbreaking, since it’s based on the kind of stuff that scientists and thinkers were dreaming up for centuries, and the initial design was conceivedin the 1940s. It was properly put on paper in the 1970s, built in the 1980s, and launched in the 1990s.

It features a 7'10" mirror that ends up making the telescope itself about the size of a bus. It has different instruments that observe the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to capture incredible images of both earth and deep space, and it has a resolution ten times better than that of ground-based observatories. It’s solar powered and orbits the earth once every 97 minutes.

And we can credit the Hubble Space Telescope with tons of discoveries, including:

Determining the rate of expansion of the universeA comet’s collision with JupiterThe first direct look at the surface of PlutoViewing distant galaxies, gas clouds, and black holesSeeing billions of years into the universe’s pastReappearance of a supernova

Mass and size of the Milky Way

And tons more. This has been a crucial tool to defining the universe around us and helping us plumb the depths of science’s limits.

No, Google Isn't Building An Autonomous Motorcycle… Yet
The Sunday Times breathlessly revealed that Google is petitioning the California State government to allow the testing of autonomous motorcycles on public roads. That's not quite right. Here's why. Back in January, Google – along with several other interested parties – sent letters to the DMV regarding that will govern...

Maniacs At Sturgis Prove You Can Do Stunts On A Harley-Davidson
If I had to ride around the inside of a giant bowl like lettuce in a salad-spinner, a Harley-Davidson is probably the last bike I'd want to ride... But apparently it is possible. These boys might have balls as heavy as their bikes. Be warned; there's no actual nudity in...

The Prettiest B-17 Flying Fortress Was The XB-38
Boeing's B-17 has been likened to a flying work of industrial art and there is no doubt that it remains a symbol of American ingenuity and the bravery of those who fought in WWII. Still, sometimes something thought of as visually close to perfection can be improved upon, and the...

The United States Air Force Thunderbirds are "America's Ambassadors in Blue," a famed air demonstration squadron. At air shows the announcers always say that Thunderbird aircraft could be ready for action within as little as a few days time. Well, as it turns out, they aren't lying. This is the...

Watch Dirt Bikers Go Nuts On The World's Only Floating Motocross Track
Last month, Red Bull inaugurated a new motocross course at Munich's Olympic Park. It features a superkicker, two quarterpipes, four regular ramps, and two gap jumps... all perched on top of a lake. Red Bull says the whole structure weights "as much 12 Boeing 747s" which equates to something like...
