This Derbi Laguna Sport Will Ignite The Spirit Of Moped Within You
This Derbi Laguna Sport Will Ignite The Spirit Of Moped Within You-July 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:09:46

Sporty-looking European mopeds like this Spanish-built Derbi kick so much ass. I’m not sure if it’s because my 50CC Honda MB5 has been dormant for too long, or because I’ve been playing on repeat for the last two years, but I have a strong desire for something with a tiny engine and ‘80s graphics welling up deep inside of me. And for good reason. Motor Pedals rule!

Derbi, now a subsidiary of Piaggio, used to be an independent bike manufacturer in Spain, and it is rapidly approaching its 100th anniversary. The company won a number of tiny engine class Motorcycle Grands Prix, taking the 50cc class championship in ‘69, ‘70, and ‘72. In the ‘80s, when the class was increased to 80cc, the team won four championships in a row. It’s fair to say Derbi know how to build a small engine.

You know what else kicks ass? Derbi got its name from the Catalan phrase Derivats de bicicletes. I love weird factoids like that.

There is something exhilarating about riding a bike that tops out at about 30 mph. If you think a Miata is a good example of a momentum vehicle, you’ve never ridden a two-wheeled contraption with horsepower measured in tenths. You are forced to take stuff like this to its absolute limit with every corner. You find yourself tucking out of the wind to try to eke out a few more miles per hour. It’s a game, to see if you can beat physics. To see if you can make it from point to point without slowing down enough to require pedals.

With tires only two inches wide, a modern compound makes all the difference. The Michelin Gazelles on the rear of this bike are about as good a tire as you can get for a ‘ped, and help keep your speed buried firmly in the upper limits.

It’s a whole new world to experience, the world of Moped. From pre-mixing your fuel to tuning reed valves, even the parlance is different. You’ll spend hours perusing MopedArmy and Treatland for parts, hop up ideas, and customization. You want your moped to be YOUR moped. It’s an addiction.

I thought I’d kicked the habbit, but evidently not. If you want to save me from myself, . It looks like a winner. Maybe I’ll just watch Throw A Kit one more time.

For $8,000, This 1980 Volvo 245 DL Is The Box It Came In
Have you ever wanted to go back in time? Today's Volvo is so blessedly original and low mileage that driving it would be the next best thing. Is its price however, worth turning back the clock? Jay-Z is married to Beyoncé, which might make you wish you were Jay-Z, at...

Driving Subaru's WRX STI Rally Car Will Melt Every Part Of Your Brain
Rallying is a nuanced art. It takes years of training to get to the level where you can drive an open class car like this Subaru WRX STI with a sequential gearbox and 500 pound feet of torque. But I didn't have years of training. I had hours. And driving...

For $15,000, This 2003 Audi S8 Will Let You Stick Around
Do you remember the movie Ronin and how crazy everyone drove in it? For reasons that will become evident, today's S8 is emblematic of both that film and the lone warrior mythos. Will its price however, prove more of a bonin'? Yesterday's proved to be the Sommer of our discontent,...

2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat: The Jalopnik Review
I’m not gonna lie to you: the first time I drove the 707-horsepower , it kind of scared the shit out of me just a little bit. (: The people who manage Fiat Chrysler’s Texas press fleet sent me an email out of the blue that said “Hey, we got...

Hip MTV Study: The Youths Don't Hate Cars After All
At last, sweet vindication. For years I've been fighting against the myth parroted by terrified industry types and lazy Boomer assholes , don't want cars, and only ride buses and their super-cool Razor scooters. Young people DO want cars! How do I know? Because of a new study by the...

For $43,000, This 1985 Ole Sommer Oscar Is Your Morning Danish
Today's contender is a slab-side Cobra replica built by a Copenhagen Volvo dealer and powered by a turbo red block. If that doesn't blow your mind, maybe its price won't either. Okay, we all know that the nickname of Volvo's first-ever car, the ÖV4, was Jakob owing to a prototype...
