This Is David Letterman Interviewing Mario Andretti At The 1971 Indy 500
This Is David Letterman Interviewing Mario Andretti At The 1971 Indy 500-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:42

David Letterman’s career in TV comes to an end this evening with the conclusion of his run as host of Late Show. But Letterman has humble roots in Indiana, and before he became one of the most successful late night hosts in history, he was just a guy from Indiana that loved racing. Here he is at the Indy 500.

Letterman was reporting from one of the corners at the race when Mario Andretti dropped out. Jim McKay introduced him as Chris Economaki, the dean of motorsports journalism, instead of by his own name.

Letterman gets a few questions in to Mario, and that’s it. And nobody there thought they’d still be watching him on TV nearly 45 years later. Letterman will undoubtedly be at the Indy 500 this weekend to watch his own Rahal Letterman Lanigan team go for the win, but he won’t have to talk about it on TV at all.

That’s probably a relief.

Back Of Talladega NASCAR Field Wrecks In Least Surprising Crash Ever
You know what they say: cautions beget cautions. A caution called for minor contact involving Trevor Bayne, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Daniel Suarez resulted in one heck of a messy restart with 33 laps to go that took out numerous cars in the rear of the field. Before the restart,...

Talladega NASCAR Race Stopped Three Times In 28 Laps For Big Crashes
It’s official: Talladega’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race is insane this year after a relatively tame start. A third red flag of the night came out after Chase Elliott tried to take advantage of a hole that quickly disappeared at the front of the field, making a big ol’ mess....

IndyCar Scares The Shit Out Of Jenson Button But Formula E Is Boring
If there’s one driver that has been missed in Formula One, it’s certainly 2009 world champion Jenson Button. Button isn’t done with racing yet, but won’t be making a full-time return to F1. Now he’s named two other series he won’t be trying in F1's place: Formula E and IndyCar,...

Here’s What It’s Like To Break The Sound Barrier In A Dang Car
It’s been 20 years since the made its record-breaking speed run, becoming the only car to ever travel faster than the speed of sound. Yet as its driver explains, it wasn’t as simple as mashing the go-pedal and having its two enormous Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines blast him into the...
