This Is How Turkish Troops Surrendered The Attempted Military Coup-July 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:14:11

Just hours after a few of their own while on the air, the troops attempting a military coup in Turkey surrendered live on that very channel.

The attempted coup began , with fighter jets flying over the city and tanks in the roads. The Turkish capital of Ankara saw chaos as well, with low-flying jets over the city and helicopter gunships opening fire upon it.

It was unclear who had control of Turkey for much of the coup, but some areas of the military did make claims of taking “full control of administration” during the attempt. The coup attempt began to fizzle down just after midnight Eastern Time, and reports that 2,839 military officers were detained.

The surrender came from troops occupying the Istanbul bridge, according to from Turkish journalist Mahir Zeynalov. Below is the CNN Türk footage that he posted along with it:

As of around midnight Eastern Time, Turkish broadcasters reported that at least 42 people died during the failed coup attempt and hundreds more were injured. According to , the latest update on numbers counts 161 as dead and another 1,440 injured. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan landed in Istanbul at around 9 p.m. ET on Friday and said those who plotted the coup would “pay for this in the harshest way.”
