When the , enthusiasts were shocked. It was a successful, beloved vehicle, and in the blink of an eye it was gone — to be replaced, seemingly, only by its Lexus platform-mates. But now, , and it appears to be doing so in a new, smaller form factor.

Two new teasers from Toyota show the upcoming U.S.-spec Cruiser next to a classic FJ40. The renders are charmingly low-resolution (check out how jagged the lines are on the FJ’s roof), and the cars’ display in silhouette leaves most of the design details to the imagination. But, from these images, what can we see?

With the brightness cranked, we can see just a little bit of the new truck’s styling. First off, the step-up in the beltline from the GX, midway through the second-row window, is maintained here — a little hereditary styling cue passed down through the Toyota family. We also see tail lights with colored elements top and bottom, but a reverse light slashed through the middle, which feels like a shoutout to the .

The headlights, while somewhat visible, are harder to parse. They don’t appear to be circular lamps, much to the chagrin of all who hoped “retro styling” meant a return of the FJ Cruiser, but the styling cues beneath the clear covers seem retro-inspired.

Beyond that, there’s not much we know about the upcoming Land Cruiser. The images were accompanies by text promising a “reinvention,” but without any definition for the term. All we can hope for is more information from Toyota in advance of the truck’s upcoming return to the U.S. market. I, for one, will be waiting.

For $5,900, Would You Slip On This 1996 Ford Explorer High Top?
Ford sold a lot of their original Explorers back in the day, making them a once common sight on the road. That’s not so much the case now, and today’s Centaurus conversion is one you’ve likely never seen before. Will that, and its price put it over the top? Everything...

For $5,500, Would This Hawaiian 1987 Toyota Camry Wagon Make A Good Island Hauler?
How do you spice up a dull but staple recipe? Yeah, I don’t know either, but I do know that today’s Camry is spiced up by having a five speed stick and being a utilitarian wagon. Let’s see if that makes its price palatable. While there my not be many...

Would You Pay $5,500 For A Rare Fancy-Pants 1988 Yugo GVX?
Today’s Yugo has lots of features, including a defroster on the rear window, you know, to keep your hands warm while pushing it. That’s just one of many jokes Yugo owners have to endure. Let’s see if this rare GVX’s price is yet another. Converse made its name selling high...

2017 Corvette Grand Sport: Don’t Buy Any Other Corvette
Automakers don’t pick their first drive locations by accident. This all takes months of planning with many site visits and much scouring of drive routes. The entire world knows that Atlanta turns into a bubbling bowl of stew during the summer, and Chevrolet knows that all of you are paying...

The 2016 Honda Civic Coupe Touring Might Be A Reborn Prelude
I’ll be honest, I haven’t given Honda too much thought the past few years. Growing up, they were a shining beacon of quality and design. In recent years, I hardly even bother to remember them, except for when I see the occasional candy-colored Fit. This new , though, has woken...
