In 1978 you could walk into a dealership with $3,679 and walk out with a Subaru 2-Door Sedan, complete with a 1.6-liter engine and front-wheel drive. Today you can drop in on and buy that same car with a mere $680 less in your pocket.

This listing turned up on and caught my eye, wondering how a humble Subaru could have lost so little total value over so many years while the rest of the internet gawks over Lamborghinis and AMG Mercedes depreciating by the tens of thousands of dollars in instants.

This is, of course, equal parts surprising and a complete waste of your time to even consider as noteworthy. A ripe $680 is not a lot for a car to depreciate over the course of 42 years, sure. That only measures things in total, though. Percentage-wise, this is a significant loss, around a fifth of the original cost. (If you’re curious, .)

Views from the 1978 Subaru brochure. You can tell the car for sale is a 2 Door sedan and not a coupe by the lack of full chrome window trim.

And this leaves out inflation in general. Your $3,679 in the start of 1978 had a lot more buying power than it does now. figures it was worth $15,185 in today’s money.

That and someone has to actually buy this 1978 Subaru in 2020 for the Craigslist asking price of $2,999. And .

A few weeks ago, Craigslist finally dropped its official app, and I’m sure most of you had roughly…

The point then is not that there’s some bizarre and freakish appreciation for 1978 Subarus out there (though this particular one does look to be a great example of an early FWD import), it’s more that there’s a floor for the value of some low-end cars, and you can’t really scrape too much off it, even over the course of four decades.

At $22,500, Would you Corral This 1966 Ford Mustang ‘GT 350 Tribute’?
To be fully transparent, today’s Mustang has nothing to do with Carroll Shelby other than honoring his legacy, and the car is presented in the ad as nothing more. Let’s see if that’s enough. Last Friday — last year, in fact — we looked at a long-in-the-tooth . According...

Tesla Fell Short of Its Delivery Target and Investors Aren't Happy
Welcome to 2023, everybody. As the rest of us are taking down our streamers and disposing of our novelty New Year’s eyeglasses, automakers are carrying out a much less mirthful task: Compiling and releasing their year-end sales numbers for 2022. These are the figures that stock traders love, metrics...

Wrapping Up Nice Price Or No Dice for 2022
As we say “Bye Felicia” to the rollercoaster ride that was 2022, it’s time to take one more look back at all the cars, the price tags, and the votes that made up over the past twelve months. Amazingly, this is our sixth wrap-up recapping our weekday contest of...

It’s been said that high tides lift all boats, and in a similar fashion, all Porsche badges mean ever-rising values. Today’s 944 might be a way to get in while the getting is good. That’s if its price hasn’t already risen too much. Tell me something — on those...

According to the seller of today’s Chevy van, it’s been “garage-kept and babied” all its life. Let’s see if it’s priced to soon become someone else’s baby. There’s a fun game that my friends and I like to play. The point of it is to take any movie in...
