This Tiny 18-Karat Gold Ford GT Model Car Will Only Cost You About $40,000
This Tiny 18-Karat Gold Ford GT Model Car Will Only Cost You About $40,000-June 2024

I love car collectables. I have diecast race cars all over my office, and I once found this $50 clock shaped like a steering wheel on clearance for $11. I brag about it to this day. But some collectables are totally perplexing to me, like this solid-gold miniature model.

I mean, could you really, truly, ever let someone into your house if you had a $40,000 miniature gold car on your office desk, ready to be plucked off and sold online before you notice it’s gone? Is this a concept I simply don’t understand because I don’t have a $40,000 gold model car in my house?

Let’s break this down. This previous-generation Ford GT model car is on for a starting bid of $25,000, with its 18 karats of two-tone gold, $40,000 estimated sale price, 3.3 pounds of weight, functional rubber tires and all. The jewelers who made it should have gone all out and made the tires gold, too, but I guess it’s cooler to use rubber ones to push your college education’s worth of a model car around like a Hot Wheels toy while showing it off.

But $40,000 is a lot of cash for not a lot of toy car, prompting you to ponder some logical questions. This isn’t some in the garage, or a Ferrari engine you bought online and definitely plan to swap into a car someday—you know, larger expensive items that are hard to move without keys or outside assistance. Nope, this is is a $40,000, seven-inch-long hunk of 18-karat gold someone could plop into a tote bag while you’re looking the other way on the house tour.

“Are any of my friendships worth $40,000?” you ask yourself, staring at your shiny, although scuffed from wear, as most gold is, new toy, wondering if anyone would actually try to take it at the expense of your relationship. “Am I worth $40,000? Was this model car worth the self doubt I now feel?”

“I’ll tell them it’s fake,” you think, before realizing that would make you sound cheap. You couldn’t allow that, even in these dire circumstances. “I’ll lock it in a case,” you conclude next, immediately taking that idea back as you remember what a great accent it is to the executive desk you bought years ago but rarely use because you have that lovely office in the city.

Questions flood your mind, doubt floods your heart and soul, and no one floods the halls of your mansion, because every time you reach for the phone to ask someone to visit, you think about the possibilities your new toy has brought. You’re alone, but at least you have your car of gold.

I Can Confirm That The New Smart Car Is Good
I Can Confirm That The New Smart Car Is Good
I instantly despised the first when it debuted. Smart my ass. No car should try to convince you that buying one was a good decision. However! The car grew on me and I finally drove the new one. Much to my great pleasure, it was a genuinely wonderful vehicle, though...

The 2018 Audi R8 Spyder Is A $175,000 Absolution Of All Guilt You Could Possibly Ever Feel
The man who dropped off the keys to a loaner 2018 at my trendy eighth-floor walk-up on the Lower East Side shuffled away after the transaction was complete, looking over his shoulder longingly at the shining supercar like he was walking away forever from his firstborn son. In fact, he...

For $30,000, Could This 2006 Ford F-350 Car Carrier/Camper Be All The Prep You Need?
If you’re a prepper AND a car nut then today’s … er, chimera, is the… um, car/house/garage for you. The question is, will the upcoming apocalypse break the bank? I must say that I’m a bit flabbergasted that yesterday’s garnered an overwhelming 80-percent Crack Pipe loss. I figured five-grand would...

2017 Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid: The Tech Review
2017 Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid: The Tech Review
The new Plug-In Hybrid is supposed to be futuristic-feeling luxury without the scary unfamiliarly of a pure-EV powertrain or a “startup” brand backing it. The execution—even in a brief jaunt—is impressive enough to convert some electric skeptics in the big executive car crowd. More than that, it speaks to how...

For $5,000, Could This 1983 Subaru 1800GL Convertible Have You Flexing Your Wallet?
Today’s Subaru is just like Anne Boylen, an old girl who’s had her head chopped off. Lucky for us, this aftermarket beheading hasn’t meant the Subie’s demise. We’ll have to see if its price kills it for you, however. Overcoming fear of the unknown is a laudable achievement for the...

How My Arranged Marriage With Volvo Got Hot Again
How My Arranged Marriage With Volvo Got Hot Again
I met Volvo for the first time in the year 2000. My dad introduced us, both shy and unsure of our futures, on a balmy summer day not long after my 16th birthday. He’d already paid the $500 dowry, and I had little choice in the matter. That rusty 1985...
