This Tiny 18-Karat Gold Ford GT Model Car Will Only Cost You About $40,000
This Tiny 18-Karat Gold Ford GT Model Car Will Only Cost You About $40,000-April 2024

I love car collectables. I have diecast race cars all over my office, and I once found this $50 clock shaped like a steering wheel on clearance for $11. I brag about it to this day. But some collectables are totally perplexing to me, like this solid-gold miniature model.

I mean, could you really, truly, ever let someone into your house if you had a $40,000 miniature gold car on your office desk, ready to be plucked off and sold online before you notice it’s gone? Is this a concept I simply don’t understand because I don’t have a $40,000 gold model car in my house?

Let’s break this down. This previous-generation Ford GT model car is on for a starting bid of $25,000, with its 18 karats of two-tone gold, $40,000 estimated sale price, 3.3 pounds of weight, functional rubber tires and all. The jewelers who made it should have gone all out and made the tires gold, too, but I guess it’s cooler to use rubber ones to push your college education’s worth of a model car around like a Hot Wheels toy while showing it off.

But $40,000 is a lot of cash for not a lot of toy car, prompting you to ponder some logical questions. This isn’t some in the garage, or a Ferrari engine you bought online and definitely plan to swap into a car someday—you know, larger expensive items that are hard to move without keys or outside assistance. Nope, this is is a $40,000, seven-inch-long hunk of 18-karat gold someone could plop into a tote bag while you’re looking the other way on the house tour.

“Are any of my friendships worth $40,000?” you ask yourself, staring at your shiny, although scuffed from wear, as most gold is, new toy, wondering if anyone would actually try to take it at the expense of your relationship. “Am I worth $40,000? Was this model car worth the self doubt I now feel?”

“I’ll tell them it’s fake,” you think, before realizing that would make you sound cheap. You couldn’t allow that, even in these dire circumstances. “I’ll lock it in a case,” you conclude next, immediately taking that idea back as you remember what a great accent it is to the executive desk you bought years ago but rarely use because you have that lovely office in the city.

Questions flood your mind, doubt floods your heart and soul, and no one floods the halls of your mansion, because every time you reach for the phone to ask someone to visit, you think about the possibilities your new toy has brought. You’re alone, but at least you have your car of gold.

Used Cars Cost Almost Double What They Did Nine Years Ago
The last time I bought a used car it set me back $9,000, which, according to new data from Edmunds, is just over average for a used car in 2019. That number is almost 75 percent higher than it was in 2010. The data says that thanks in part...

If You Are Going To Buy A Family Car, Don’t Forget The Family Part
People buy vehicles for all kinds of reasons. Some of them are rational, and some of them are emotional. There is nothing wrong with buying a car because it’s fast, or stylish, or it just makes you feel good when you drive it. However, when the primary objective is...

Why Is Car Buying Especially Terrible For Women And What Should Be Done About It?
As Jalopnik’s resident car buying expert and professional car shopper, I get emails. Lots of emails. I’ve decided to pick a few questions and try to help out. This week we are discussing why dealerships especially suck for women, the best off-lease sedans, and the choice between a new...

The 2019 Lincoln Navigator Is A Glorious Return To American Opulence
We never had kings or queens here in America. (Well, we did before we were our own country, but we showed those fools what we really thought of them.) If we did, though, they’d all be driving 2019 . The car is flush with splendor, rich with opulence and...

At $43,000, Is This 2015 Porsche Cayenne The Brown Diesel Wagon We All Want?
When you think of legendary Porsche products, cars like today’s Cayenne probably won’t be at the top of the list. The diesel model’s lack of popularity has driven extraordinary depreciation, meaning perhaps more of us could drive it as well. Provenance is a word that describes an object or...

Please Buy This $6,800 Toyota Celica All-Trac So I Don't Have To
Ah, shit. There’s a Celica All-Trac for sale, and it’s only $6,800. Oh no. Over the past few years, I have grown increasingly obsessed with . Corollas. Cressidas. Crestas. Even a Carina fascination bubbles up every so often. Old cars to drive sideways on pavement. What I have largely...
