This Volkswagen-Based Land-Airplane Is an Adorable and Ridiculous Use of Your Money
This Volkswagen-Based Land-Airplane Is an Adorable and Ridiculous Use of Your Money-March 2024

If you’re trying to buy a rear-engined, aerodynamic, aluminum-bodied car for new Camry money, you don’t really have many options. That’s why this ad should be such a godsend to the significant portion of our readership finding themselves in this situation: . It’s also a Beetle chassis with an airplane stuck on top of it.

We’ve seen a number of, and I don’t care who knows it, I think I love them all. There’s something about the strange, sleek snugness of small aircraft that just make for great car bodies. This particular one is from a 1959 Cessna 172, and it’s on what appears to be a fairly cut-down (as in floorboards removed, leaving the main backbone) 1968 Beetle chassis.

Inside, we have seating for four on two-tone, low-back VW seats, and the whole original, gauge-laden instrument cluster has been retained in the cockpit, with one of the gauges replaced with the Beetle’s all-in-one speedo/fuel gauge/warning lights instrument.

Headlights have been set into a grille around the propeller (which, it seems, can block them?) and the wings are hilariously cut down into stubby little winglets, which provide some shade and rain protection for the side windows.

The engine is exposed at the rear, but it’s got a nice chrome fan shroud and big chrome headers and lots of other shiny bits, so there’s no shame in showing it off. It’s a period-correct single-port motor, which, in original 1500cc guise, was good for 53 horsepower. Those headers probably help somewhat, but this plane isn’t likely to take flight.

Now, sure, $25,000 is a lot of money for something mildly outrageous like this, but, to it’s credit, there’s no reason why it couldn’t be a reasonably practical daily driver, right?

I mean, the ad says it could be an “airport taxi or parade vehicle,” but what about the daily parade of life? That deserves fun stuff like this, right?

I think so.

Subaru's Success In America Is Not Just Because Of Its Cars
This year , and it’s a story any company would be proud of. While the automaker is small compared to the domestic brands and import giants like Honda and Toyota, it has broken into the mainstream with record-breaking sales through a focus on quality and some very clever marketing. But...

The 2018 Mercedes-Maybach S560 Is How You Make 'The Best Car In The World' Better
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is best known as “.” The Mercedes-Maybach is built off of the regular S-Class, and that presents it with the challenge of making the best car, somehow, impossibly, better. This has made the car quietly one of the most entertaining vehicles ever produced. The important thing to...

The 2018 Subaru BRZ tS Is A Better BRZ—And That's A Problem
Let’s play a game of call and response. I say “Ford Mustang”, you say “Cars and Coffee mishaps.” I say “Tesla Model 3,” you say “panel gaps.” But if I say “,” you’re most likely going to first give a knowing nod of appreciation but then lament “needs more power.”...

For $6,000, Could You Beat This 1991 Honda Beat?
If today’s Honda were to break down, would that then make it a deadbeat? We may never know the answer as it’s said to run just fine. It’s price? Well, we’ll just see if that lives up to expectations. As car enthusiasts, we all proclaim an affinity for cars with...

For $4,900, Would This Rare 1991 Mercedes 300SL Let You Stick It To The Man?
With a six cylinder engine and a five-speed stick, today’s Mercedes R129 is a rare bird indeed. We’ll have to decide if this lower-spec’d roadster’s price make you want to flip it the bird as well. When you think “King of the Hill” do you envision yesterday’s , hubristically anointed...
