One of the coolest benefits offers its Japanese customers that we don’t get here is its Kinto Factory — a department that specializes in feature upgrades and refurbishing of existing vehicles. Thanks to the , Toyota owners can add things like active safety features and other goodies that may not have existed for their car at the time it rolled off the production line.

The semi-new has just been added to the Kinto lineup, and through it, Toyota is distributing a software update previously only available to those who purchased — or — to the Morizo Selection version of the hot hatch. This update improves the Yaris’ peak torque from 272 lb-ft in the original car to 287 lb-ft. That’s a healthy increase, especially considering how small and light the little homologation special is.

that those who purchase the upgrade will also gain the ability to change other electronically-controlled performance parameters for the optimal driving feel. There are supposedly 27 combinations of steering assistance, accelerator response and all-wheel-drive torque distribution available with this software. For a $110 fee, Toyota’s GR Garage engineers will even make setting recommendations for you, based on collected driving data.

The Kinto Factory is a great idea, particularly in the context of the current automotive market. Cars are becoming harder to find and more expensive, prompting everyone to hold onto their vehicles for as long as they can. Offering welcome, quality-of-life upgrades over the course of a car’s lifespan may not be the shrewd capitalist strategy if you’re determined to sell as many vehicles as possible. But if you actually want your customers to be happy and the world to be less wasteful, this is the way to do it.

Alas, no such service exists for Toyota customers in North America. When the Kinto Factory was announced, there was some suggestion Toyota might monitor the reception and see how the experiment might be applied to other regions. I really hope the automaker recognizes a good idea when it’s come up with one; how great would it be for the company to offer some perks to those who have the standard model? To that end we’ve reached out to Toyota Motor North America for comment, and if buyers in the West could one day expect similar after-purchase care.

For $17,500, Is This 2006 Maserati Quattroporte Worth It For The Exhaust Note Alone?
Today’s Maser offers the siren’s song of exotic Italian luxury, all for the price of a Kia. We’ll have to decide however, if that price is just the tip of the iceberg. Among the things that can be considered extraordinarily exasperating are extra innings in a ballgame, a massage in...

For $3,250, You Could Get Back Jack With This 1987 Nissan Pulsar NX Sportback
Pulsars are the universe’s disco lights. Today’s Nissan Pulsar might just light up your life, that is if its price doesn’t make you say good night. So, fully 55% of you wouldn’t pony up the paltry twenty-four hundred yesterday’s asked. What’s up with that? I get that the car was...

For $2,500 This 1982 Saab 900s APC Turbo Could Be A Sweet Swede
Today’s classic Saab is spec’d the way you’d want it, and one way you certainly wouldn’t. That’s a bum transmission, but will the rest of it, and its price, add up to a car that you still might see shifting into your driveway? Yesterday’s offered a siren’s call to likely...

For $7,999, Would This 1984 Nissan 300ZX Turbo Make For A Nice Anniversary Present?
Today’s Z once commemorated Nissan’s 50th year since its founding. Let’s see if this garish but great sports car’s price now is anything worth celebrating. Manual transmissions are generally less complicated than their automatic brethren, but they’re still a mess of meshing cogs, bearings, and hair’s breadth clearances that when...

For $2,400, You Could Finger The Bad Guys In This 2003 Ford Crown Vic P71 Interceptor
Old cop cars like today’s Crown Vic never die, they just move on after retirement to become taxis or maybe hipster hoopties. This one may have been dropped and primer’d but will its price warrant a look? It’s a rough time to be the Postal Service these days. Email and...

For $24,999, Is This Custom 1991 Ford Ranger 4X4 The Truck We Deserve, Even If It’s Not The Truck We Need?
Have you ever wanted to drive a convertible pickup truck that is named like a superhero? If so, then today’s Skyranger might be the truck for you. That is, of course, if its price doesn’t prove super villainous. We had another squeaker yesterday. I would have preferred a moaner or...
