Toyota that it will unveil its Tesla Model Y fighter at the Shanghai Motor Show next month. And for a company that wasa car electrification pioneer with the Prius before becoming a bit of a laggard in recent years, all I’m saying is that this car better be good.

The car, a crossover/SUV/CUV, is based on Toyota’s electric e-TNGA platform, which you can read more about . It will basically be an all-electric RAV4. Press days for the Shanghai Motor Show start April 19, before the show opens to the public on April 21.

From :

Toyota will use the Shanghai auto show next month to unveil a near-production concept of a full-electric utility vehicle that will compete against battery-powered models such as the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID4.

[...]

The utility vehicle will be sold in Europe, the U.S. and China, a Toyota spokesman told Automotive News Europe. The company gave no date for the sales launch but it is expected to reach showrooms next year.

It will be built at Toyota’s so-called ZEV Factory in Japan.

The EV was developed with Subaru, which will launch its version “within the next five years,” Subaru said in December.

Toyota has been late to all-electric for reasons that I can’t totally discern, though I suspect that its portfolio of hybrid cars has helped it comply with emissions regulations across the world without having to go all-in on full electric. Toyota also has continued dabbling in , a choice which some people find odd but something that I have always thought is smart, in make-sure-all-your-bases-are-covered sort of way, since Toyota has the money to do it and why not.

Still, the issue with taking on the Model Y is that the Model Y , while challengers like the ID.4 are . Which means that the Toyota EV will have to be more than just good enough and have the right price if Toyota hopes to stand a chance with it. This is what it looks like to be living in what is probably the most exciting time ever for cars.

The Maserati Birdcage Was A 250 HP Featherweight Champion
Back in 1960 the Maserati Tipo 61 was the epitome of power-to-weight ratios. With a two-point-nine-liter inline-four engine making around 250 horsepower, and an all-in weight under 1350 pounds, it was ready to run. The chassis, weighing just 155 pounds on its own, was built from a series of...

Tesla Is Close To Joining The Grown-Ups
It was June 29, 2010, when Tesla had its initial public offering. Shares now priced at more than $800 could have been had for $17, at first. The models X, S, 3, and Y didn’t exist. The future was uncertain. For a good sense of what Tesla was, take...

Toyota's All-New 2021 Toyota Sienna Is Now A Hybrid And Can Come With A Vacuum And Fridge
If you still somehow inexplicably think that . Toyota’s just-unveiled new Sienna minivan is a good, concrete reminder of why this is. The 2021 Toyota Sienna should, if the world were a more rational place, be a formidable competitor to any popular SUV out there. It has basically everything...

The 2021 Porsche 911 Targa Takes 7 More Seconds To Drop Its Roof Than A Regular Cabriolet
Look, I know we’re splitting hairs here, but when an automaker produces a million versions of the same car, the spec race has got to come down to the wire. And the new 2021 Targa’s roof deployment time is borderline unacceptable. Porsche already makes a 992-generation 911 convertible, available...
