Traffic Jams: Death From Above 1979 - 'White Is Red'-November 2024

In August of 2014, I moved into my college freshman dorm. A few weeks later, I joined the college radio station, and stumbled upon Death From Above 1979's then brand-new album The Physical World. It’s a near-perfect album, with no skips the whole way through, and it was the best energy to welcome a person into a radio station that literally sat underground.

The breakout tracks from The Physical World were “Trainwreck 1979,” “Right On, Frankenstein!,” “Government Trash,” and “Crystal Ball,” but “White Is Red” is a perfect counterpoint to a lot of the LP’s heavier stuff. The first half of the album never really slows down, with screaming guitars and booming drums the whole way through, but “White Is Red” shows up to slow things down. Make you listen.

If you’re looking for pairings, or flow seamlessly. Anything with some edge, a bit of (but not too much) fidelity, and some absolutely perfect guitar tone will work. Try it out for yourself, and build a new driving playlist for when you put your foot down, down, down, down.
