Traffic Jams: Oh Wonder - ‘Don't Let The Neighbourhood Hear’
Traffic Jams: Oh Wonder - ‘Don't Let The Neighbourhood Hear’-January 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:12:06

Over the months, we’ve covered with Traffic Jams, and it’s been great thanks to the picks of my fellow writers. But sometimes, you just need a great pop record to kick start your week, and today I’m here to provide that. More specifically, a pop duo based in Brixton is here to provide that.

The duo call themselves Oh Wonder. They’ve been knocking around for a few years and have put out some great records. And today, I’d like to draw your attention to a track called “Don’t Let The Neighbourhood Hear,” which is a pretty neat introduction to where they are.

The track is from the band’s latest album, which is called 22 Break and came out last summer. And where past records have been, on the whole, about relationships, touring the world and all the other go-top topics of a British pop group, this one’s a little different.

Formed by Anthony West and Josephine Vander Gucht in the early 2010s, the duo had a pretty prolific few years releasing three albums and playing countless shows in the years up to 2020. But then, when the pandemic hit, they were forced to cancel a world tour because of the spread of COVID.

The duo, a couple by this time, was forced inside like the rest of the world, and found themselves re-evaluating their relationship. A relationship they’d built while playing shows across the globe.

They’ve often “maybe the first break-up album in history written and recorded with the person you’re breaking up with,” which is a pretty bleak idea to think about. The resulting album is 34 minutes of soul-searching as the pair question who they are, and this track is a definite standout for me.

Ultimately, though, it does have a happy ending as writing this album helped rebuild their relationship and they’re now married and back on tour.

Fun fact, it was my birthday yesterday and to celebrate I finally got to see them live in – more than two years after plans to go to a show in Bristol were put on hold.

Jamie Lynn Spears Says Tesla Is Responsible For Killing Her Cats
Jamie Lynn Spears, younger sister of the iconic Britney and star of the slightly-less-iconic Zoey 101, took to Instagram to discuss one of her very normal, regular people problems: her Teslas are killing her cats. I’m finding myself at a loss for words here, but I’m going to do...

What Vehicle Changed Your Long-Held Opinions?
If there’s one thing that’s true about people passionate about something, it’s that they’ve probably got strong opinions that are tough as hell to change. Whether that’s your opinion on a football team or your exceptional hatred for certain foods, we’ve all been there. But I want to know...

What's The Dumbest Thing You've Seen Towed?
Cruising down a snow-covered back road a few days ago, I saw something awful. I saw someone hauling one of those mini campers. Normally, those campers are fine. They’re cool with me. But this particular one looked like it had just been salvaged from the junkyard. The two tires...

The Corvette Debuted 68 Years Ago Today
On January 17, 1953, the Chevrolet Corvette prototype was unveiled at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City at Motorama. But the car that we recognize today as synonymous with (relatively) accessible sportiness wasn’t as loved when it first appeared. (Welcome to Today in History, the series where we...

Open Windows May Reduce COVID-19 Risk In Cars: Study
COVID-19 has completely changed the face of travel as we know it, with massively reduced numbers of people taking flights and public transportation—but our cars have remained a mystery. How safe are we in our vehicles? What are our risks? A study published by Science Advances in early January...

This 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Brochure Makes One Of The Weirdest Claims I've Seen
I always like it when old car ads or brochures go out of their way to tout features and details that are, to modern eyes, . I’m not sure what exactly causes the car-buying public to decide what they find important or interesting, but I’m pretty sure one thing...
